The church in Gerlachshausen

The Church of St. Giles in Gerlachshausen in Lower Franconia is a branch of the parish of Stadtschwarzach. It is on Schweinfurter Strasse in the middle of the village. The church belongs to the dean's office in Kitzingen .

history

Gerlachshausen was first mentioned in 918. The community was one of the original parishes of Main Franconia and one of the oldest Christian communities in the Steigerwald foreland. In 1115 the neighboring Benedictine abbey Münsterschwarzach acquired the parish. At this time a new church was built in Gerlachshausen. Branches were St. Maria de Rosario in Dimbach, the Michaelskirche in Düllstadt, the Veitskirche Hörblach, the Laurentiuskirche in Nordheim and Schwarzenau, as well as the church in Sommerach.

In 1325 the parish was incorporated into the monastery parish of Münsterschwarzach, and at the same time a new church was built in the village. This began the slow descent of Gerlachshausen. Until 1598 monks from the abbey looked after the church in Gerlachshausen. The Würzburg bishop Julius Echter and the abbot Johannes IV. Burckhardt decreed on July 11, 1598 that secular clergy would take over pastoral care in the village.

In 1634 the parish of Gerlachshausen was finally dissolved. From then on it was part of the parish Stadtschwarzach . In 1751 the nave was rebuilt. In 1952 and 1984 the interior was renewed, in 1969 and 1991 the exterior. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the church as an architectural monument . Underground remains of previous buildings are listed as soil monuments .

architecture

The church is a large, east- facing hall with an east choir from the beginning of the 15th century. The basement of the five-story tower at the southeast corner of the nave also dates from the 15th century. Around 1600 it was increased and given the characteristic Julius Echter pointed helmet . The tower has arched windows with sound hatches on the top floor with the bell chamber .

The nave is illuminated by three arched windows each. The entrance on the south side is characteristic. The rectangular portal has a drilled frame. The simple west facade is divided only by a figure of a saint and an ox-eye . The nave has a gable roof with dormers.

Furnishing

High altar

The high altar by an unknown master came into the church with the renovation of the nave in the middle of the 18th century after 1751. In the course of renovations in the 20th century, it was renovated several times. It stands in the center of the choir with a two-column structure and has side passages. A special feature is the two-storey tabernacle structure, which is rarely found in the region.

The central altar panel from the Rococo represents the church patron Aegidius. The assistant figures are the sculptures of the Evangelist John on the right and St. Mark on the left. Vases are set up above the passageways. In the place of another painting that was used as an excerpt, the eye of God was placed above the sheet in a halo.

Side altars

The side altars were also placed in the church during the renovation in the 18th century. The stucco marble frames by Andreas Meyer date from 1755. The altar leaves with a similar structure are more recent and were probably made in 1914 by the Würzburg church painter Eulogius Böhler .

On the sheet of the so-called Sacred Heart Altar north of the choir arch , the Sacred Heart is depicted in a crowd. Above the altar there is a fresco with some putti, also painted by Böhler . On the sheet of the southern cross altar the deposition of Jesus is depicted, above it is a fresco from the 20th century depicting God the Father.

Bells

The church bell consists of four bells . The older bells had to be handed in to be melted down during World War II. In the 1950s, the bells began to be exchanged, which was completed by 1989.

Further equipment

The people's altar was like the simple lectern in the choir in 1984. The baptismal font made of sandstone dates back to 1743. The figure on the stone shows Saint John Baptist and also came in the 18th century in the churches. The oldest part of the furnishings is the late Gothic Pietà on the north choir wall. It was created around the year 1400.

The pulpit from 1752 was installed by the Sommerach master carver Wolf Erthal. The body bears the semi-sculptural figures of the evangelists, the eye of God crowns the pulpit next to vases. In the nave there is a figure of the church patron Aegidius from the 18th century. The organ in the gallery has nine registers and was built around 1862 by the Würzburg organ builder Balthasar Schlimbach .

The frescos in the nave date from 1914 and, like parts of the other furnishings, were painted by the Würzburg painter Eulogius Böhler. On the ceiling painting, framed by representations of guardian money, one recognizes the church patron St. Aegidius with a doe, next to it the Most Holy Trinity. Originally, frescoes by Andreas Dahlweiner probably adorned the church ceiling.

Pastor (selection)

Several pastors of the Aegidius Church from the 16th and 17th centuries are known by name. At this time, Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn renounced the care of Gerlachshausen by monks of the Münsterschwarzach monastery. The world priests should henceforth live in the midst of the community and so discourage Gerlach homes from falling away from the Catholic faith. Only after the Thirty Years' War did the monastery reinstate a man from its convent.
