Eulogius Boehler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eulogius Böhler (nickname Logi ; born January 30, 1861 in Bergalingen ( Baden ), † June 5, 1943 in Würzburg ) was a German church painter and restorer . His works, especially the ceiling paintings, are still part of the furnishings in many Franconian churches.

Life

Youth and wandering years (1861 to 1910)

"Stigmatization of St. Francis" by Eulogius Böhler in the monastery church Oberzell (after 1901)

Eulogius Böhler was born on January 30, 1861 in Bergalingen, Baden, which is now part of the municipality of Rickenbach in the Hotzenwald . He and his twin brother Ignatius were born out of wedlock to a Katharina and Chrysostomus Böhler, a textile factory worker from Lörrach . The parents did not get married until 1865. In addition to his twin brother, Eulogius had other siblings, but not all of them reached adulthood.

Böhler first attended elementary school in Lörrach and stood out here and in the advanced training school that soon followed because of his talent for drawing. However, it was not financially possible for the parents to finance the son's drawing training. Böhler then began an apprenticeship as a whitewater and painter. During this time the first pictures were taken, first “The Rötteln Castle near Lörrach” and “The Little Church in the Kaiser Mountains ”.

During his wandering years , Böhler first moved to Munich , where he attended an art school in the evening to promote his talent. In 1881 he came to Würzburg at the age of twenty. Here he worked as an assistant to Georg Wahler, but was also able to accept his first orders as a painter and restorer. In particular, the restoration of pictures by Franconian baroque painters such as those of the Herrlein family , Georg Anton Urlaubs and Januarius Zicks became Böhler's specialty.

At the same time, Eulogius also worked as a freelancer for the Franz Wilhelm Driesler studio and thus achieved his financial independence. In 1888 he married Elisabeth Katzenberger from Würzburg, with whom he was to have six sons and two daughters. The marriage and the birth of the children also meant that the family gave up the small apartment on Semmelstrasse and began to build their own small house on Leutfresserweg.

Self-employed church painter (1910 to 1943)

In 1910, Böhler had earned enough money to start his own business. The neo-baroque art movement that he represented was extremely popular and Böhler received many commissions from the Catholic Church. Between 1910 and 1914 alone he contributed over twelve large furnishing elements for Franconian churches. Above all, ceiling paintings and stations of the cross were the specialty of the Würzburg resident.

In addition to the church paintings, Böhler also increasingly accepted profane work in the previous years. In 1891, for example, he painted the Conservatory in Würzburg, but the pictures were lost in the bombing raid on the city in 1945 . A large mural was also created in 1896 for the meeting room in the Klingenberg town hall. For the pictures in publications of the Hetzfeld rafters' guild, Böhler also tried to make allusions to current political events.

Eulogius Böhler was involved in many clubs in his new hometown. In addition to the raftsmen's guild, an artists 'association, Böhler was a member of the singers' association. Soon after his arrival in the city, he also joined the municipal branch of the German Alpine Club and distinguished himself as a competitive cyclist. The many commissions that the esteemed church painter Böhler received also ensured a solid financial basis.

Only with the outbreak of the First World War was a decline in orders noticeable. During the war, Böhler's son Rudolf died at the front. After the war, Böhler increasingly had to paint churches outside of Franconia as inflation had destroyed his savings. He appeared in Hessen , Rheinhessen and the Palatinate . He painted his last church at the age of seventy-nine in 1939. Eulogius Böhler died on June 5, 1943 in Würzburg and was buried in the main cemetery.

Works (selection)

Towards the end of the 19th century, Böhler began to work as an artist in various churches in what is now Main Franconia and the surrounding area. He created his last work in 1939 in Dromersheim in what is now Rhineland-Palatinate . The squared drawing for a brewery mural from 1941, preserved in Schweinfurt , documents Böhler's productive work into old age, but it cannot be proven whether the painting was still carried out.
