Schlierstadt

Schlierstadt is a district of Osterburken in the Neckar-Odenwald district ( Baden-Württemberg ). It is located in building land , a gentle hilly landscape, southeast of the Odenwald .

history

The history of Schlierstadt only becomes tangible and understandable in Roman times, between 150 and 260 AD. Building remains and fragments are evidence of Roman settlement. The Upper German-Raetian Limes ran just a few kilometers to the east. The place name suggests a settlement in the 7th / 8th centuries. Close century. "Slier" means something like muddy, moist, loamy soil. At that time the name of a settlement was often chosen according to the nature of the soil. A written mention in an allegedly by Emperor Otto III. The document issued in 996 is probably a forgery that was only made in the 13th century. At that time the Amorbach monastery owned Schlierstadt. Under this influence the local church was consecrated to St. Gangolf .

In the period between 1103 and 1265 a noble family named after the place appeared. Adalbero and Ulrich von Schlierstadt are known by name. In the 13th century, the von Ernstein became the tenth owner. It was later replaced by von Neudeck and Rüdt von Collenberg . At the beginning of the 13th century, the Dürner ministers Struzzelin and von Wagenhofen held the local bailiwick as a fief of the Lords of Dürn . In 1236 the Seligental monastery was founded and the sources about Schlierstadt became more abundant. The monastery had local rule until 1561.

In 1376 Schlierstadt came under the sovereignty of the Elector of Mainz . During the Peasants' War (1525), the residents of Schlierstadt were on the side of the rebellious peasants. The Reformation also left its mark on Schlierstadt, but the community remained Catholic. In 1656 the parish Schlierstadt belonged to the Würzburg district chapter Odenwald in Buchen. It was not until the 19th century that the parish became part of the Archdiocese of Freiburg .

The church, which is still standing today, was built in 1766/67. At the beginning of the 19th century Schlierstadt already had over 800 inhabitants. Kurmainz determined the fate of the village until 1803, after which Schlierstadt was assigned to the Principality of Leiningen . In 1806 the place became Grand Ducal Baden . In the middle of the 19th century, the wave of emigration also hit Schlierstadt. More than 120 Schlierstadt residents emigrated, mainly to America. In 1884 a savings and loan company was founded. A water pipe was built at the end of the 19th century. During the First World War , power was supplied by the Jagsthausen electricity company . In 1933 the Catholic Center Party received 60 percent of the vote in Schlierstadt.

On January 1, 1975, Schlierstadt was incorporated into Osterburken.

Today Schlierstadt has around 800 inhabitants. The population is predominantly Roman Catholic and mostly commutes to the larger neighboring towns.

Parish Church of St. Gangolf
  • The Catholic parish church of St. Gangolf was built in 1766/67 instead of a much older church and initially had no tower. The tower was only added in 1953. The church was last extensively renovated from 2011 to 2013. The annual Gangolfsritt, an equestrian procession on Gangolf Day, has been taking place there since 1955.
  • The Seligental Monastery is a former Cistercian nunnery , which fell during the Reformation and was closed in 1568. The monastery complex has merged into an agricultural property.
  • The special airfield for parachutists operated by Southsidebase GmbH was built in the 1960s.

economy

Two companies (an electrical company and the building state plastics factory) are based in the village as employers. Grain, maize, rapeseed and sugar beet are mainly grown on the lean limestone soils, and more recently also spelled , the typical green spelled grain type for the building land . The four main commercial farmers are mixed farms, three of which focus on pig breeding. One company breeds cattle.

societies

The local tennis and sports club, the homeland club and the music club are the largest clubs in Schlierstadt. Furthermore, the former glider airfield and one of the oldest jumping sites in Germany is now used by the parachute club. The skydiving operations have been handled by the Schlierstadt-based Southsidebase GmbH since spring 2009.

Personalities

The theologian Georg Zingel was born in Schlierstadt in 1428. He was a professor in Vienna and Ingolstadt , where he died in 1508, and was considered one of the most outstanding theologians on the eve of the Reformation .
