St. Michael (Neuses am Sand)
The St. Michaelskirche in Neuses am Sand in Lower Franconia is the branch church of the Catholic community. The church is located in the middle of the village on the B22 main road. Today it is part of the Kitzingen deanery .
history
Neuses am Sand was first mentioned in 1230. The sources do not mention whether there was a branch church in the village at that time. In the following centuries, many different noble families ruled the village. The predecessor of today's church was probably built under the von Fuchs family in the 17th century. The sources are also silent about what the church may have looked like.
It was not until the 18th century that plans were made to rebuild the church. In the meantime the Counts of Schönborn held rulership over the village. Today's church was built in 1733. It was not until the 19th century that the church was renovated. In 1894 the interior was redesigned, in 1969 the tower was renovated. The outside of the church was renewed in 1984. The church is the Bavarian State Conservation Office as a monument out. Underground remains are classified as a ground monument .
architecture
The church presents itself as a small hall building . It is easted and ends with a polygonal choir. The nave is simply windowed, while the choir has a total of three drilled rectangular windows. The west facade shows the portal, which was also drilled. Two ox eyes were attached above the portal . A clock is emblazoned below the gable roof. Also in the west was a roof turret with a dome.
Furnishing
High altar
The high altar was already created for the previous church in Neuses am Sand. It goes back to a foundation of Anna Maria Fuchs von Dornheim, whose husband ruled the village. In 1684 the altar came into the church. In later centuries the structure of the altar underwent some changes. At the turn of the 20th century, Eulogius Böhler created an altarpiece showing the church patron, the Archangel Michael.
This sheet was removed again between 1987 and 1997. Instead, a figure of Our Lady was placed in the center of the altar. It comes from the late Gothic period and was created around 1480. The altar has two columns and has a few angels and volute acanthus as decoration. The figure of Our Lady is also framed by two angels as assistant figures. Instead of an extract, the altar is crowned by the IHS monogram in a wreath of clouds.
Further equipment
Another important furnishing element is the figure of the Pietà kept in the nave . It comes from around 1550. A crucifix from around 1760 was also brought inside the church. The nave is crossed by 14 stations of the cross by an unknown artist. An inscription panel above the door to the sacristy names the construction conditions and the donors of the previous building and was attached here in 1674.
The nave is vaulted with a stucco ceiling. In the middle of a stucco frame you can see the IHS monogram, surrounded by a halo. The organ was created in 1821. It has eight registers and was made by Anton Etthöfer from Margetshöchheim . The roof turret of the church only has a small bell: It is subordinate to the Holy Mother of God and dates from 1744.
