Jacques Gassmann (born January 28, 1963 in Heidelberg ) is a German painter and draftsman .

Life

As the son of the professor of theology Günther Gassmann and the interpreter Ursula Gassmann, he grew up in Heidelberg . In 1969 his family moved to Strasbourg , where parallel to the Lycée he received musical training at the conservatory with the main instrument cello . After returning to Germany in 1982, he passed his Abitur in Langenhagen . As a schoolboy, Gassmann worked in graphic studios, making his first drawings on paper. In 1980 he took part in the new wave band "Cache sexe", he played synthesizers and rhythm machines . Under the name »Jeunesse Dorée«, Gassmann showed performances and exhibitions from 1982 with the later fashion designer Uli Schneider. Until 1984, parallel to civilian service, solo and group performances followed in Europe.

Gassmann is self-taught. His first painting in an exhibition was presented in 1985 at the Haus der Kunst in Munich , an expressionist work by the 22-year-old. From 1989 Gassmann devoted himself increasingly to thematic cycles. »Natural Hazards« is the first series of works. From 1990 onwards, through experiments with ink and hydrography , he developed the painting technique »Ogrody« (Polish: »Garden«), patented in 1998. From 1998 to 2002 he lived and worked on a restored farm in the Steinhude Nature Park . In 2003 he spent half a year in Poznan at the invitation of the ASP art academy there . For a while he lived on a farm in Empede near Hanover. In 2004, the then goalkeeper of Hannover 96, Robert Enke, bought the house and Gassmann lived with the Enkes for a few months. He currently lives in Würzburg.

On the recommendation of the Hanover city superintendent Dannowski , Gassmann received a working grant from the Ev. Hanns Lilje Foundation Hanover. From 1990 to 1991 the 32-work cycle of the »Apocalypse« was created as the depiction of the Revelation of John . The Lutheran theologian Eduard Lohse was an important companion during this period . Exhibitions of the cycle in 16 European cities will follow.

After the outbreak of the Second Gulf War in 1992, after discussions with pilots of the US Air Force in San Diego , he painted the more than 160-part picture series »Supersonic«. In 1994 the first orders from the field of art in architecture followed. In 1996, anatomies and pictures of medicinal herbs are created under the name » Viriditas «, which refer to the work of Hildegard von Bingen . In 1999 the series “Coasts” was created, depicting sections of the coast from the perspective of satellites. In 2003 he created pictures of mountains and figurative drawings which he still paints today under the name “Apart of me”. From this series, around 10 snowboard lines were developed for the Völkl ski company .

Since 1992 Jacques Gassmann has been active in the field of sacred space in addition to his free artistic work. He designed 16 organ prospects that were implemented. A selection of these can be seen in the Old Church in Krefeld, in the Neumünster in Würzburg and in the Castle Church in Chemnitz. Jacques Gassmann created several altar designs, including the winged altar in Schwarzenau or the "New Jerusalem" in the Augustinian Church in Würzburg. The result is the large-format wall painting in the church of St. Oswald (Baunach) near Bamberg, followed by three other large works of art on canvas for the crypt of the newly designed Würzburg Cathedral. Gassmann designs ways of the cross, which he has executed, for example, in churches in Filderstadt, Merklingen and Würzburg.

By using ink in his work, Gassmann is able to create transparent works on glass. With this technique he designed the church windows for the Marienkapelle in Schretstaken as well as art on glass for the restaurant Falco in the Westin Hotel in Leipzig and windows for the room of silence in the Heart Clinic Quedlinburg. The realization of a glass work of 80 square meters for the Jakobuskirche in Waigolshausen is open.
