St. Oswald is the name of the Roman Catholic parish and the parish church in Baunach , one of the oldest church buildings in the Bamberg district .

history

On the basis of the Fulda certificate ( Convention von Hetzbach ) it can be proven that there was a church building in Baunach as early as 816, which was probably built under Abbot Ratgar . The church is said to have been consecrated in 823 by the Würzburg bishop Wolfgar (810-832). It is under the patronage of Saint Oswald (604–642). It is one of the oldest patron saints in Germany.

The tower and choir were built much later. The tower was built during the Fulda rule in the 13th century (in or before 1244). This is where the former entrance to the church is located. The pointed spire with its four corner turrets was probably only erected before the Thirty Years War . The choir was built together with the nave, as it existed until 1970, from 1454 on and inaugurated in 1460. In the years 1970 to 1972 the church was expanded, consecrated in 1972 and renovated again in the 1990s. A downsizing and redesign, based on the parish church, which was demolished in 1970, took place from August 2016 to March 11, 2018 under the artistic direction of Domkapitular em. Dr. Jürgen Lenssen. On March 11, 2018, the new altar was consecrated by the diocesan administrator Ulrich Boom and relics of Saints Burkard, Felix and Hadrian and Blessed P. Engelmar were buried Unzeitung.

The parish of Baunach today belongs to the parish community of St. Christophorus of the dean's office Haßberge to the diocese of Würzburg and, together with the current parish communities of Maintal-Heilige Land (Kirchlauter, Together on the way Ebern, St. Kilian, companions Pfarrweisach and St. Christophorus in Baunach-, Itz - and Lautergrund) form a pastoral care unit.

Furnishing

The special pieces of equipment include the holy grave, the baroque high altar and a modern altarpiece.

Holy grave

The Holy Sepulcher was probably designed in the 18th century by the painter Anwander (1715–1770) and was last renovated in the 1980s. The sight, which is similar to a stage decoration, is painted in Rococo style and shows representations from the history of salvation. In the center of the picture the Savior is depicted in the grave until Easter Vigil, from Easter Vigil the figure of the conqueror of death is depicted with a victory flag. Above it is a representation of God the Father who hurls lightning bolts at the Lamb from the sky. To the left is a representation of Moses with the Ten Commandments. On the right is the Evangelist John, below the prophet Zacharias, on his left are Adam and Eve. The backdrop of the Holy Sepulcher can be viewed all year round since the parish church reopened on March 11, 2018 (niche in the south wall).

Former altarpiece

The former altarpiece was created by the artist Jacques Gassmann (* 1963) in 2000. It is 12.5 m high and 8 m wide. The central design element is the transition from dark (in the lower part and the edge areas of the picture) to light. A luminous phenomenon rises in the central axis; based on its contours, this appearance takes on a certain physicality. The former altarpiece represents the "optical counterweight" to the Holy Sepulcher. In addition, in the east of the nave there is the baroque high altar with a new altarpiece by Michael Triegel, in front of which the new altar has been located since the redesign. In front of the former altarpiece, a Gothic Pietá has been to be found since 2018, which was extensively renovated in 2015 after many years in the attic of the rectory.

New altarpiece (high altar) by Michael Triegel

In 2017, the St. Oswald church administration decided on a new altarpiece, created by the Leipzig painter Michael Triegel . The work of art deals with the connection between incarnation and passion.

Other equipment

The font probably dates back to the 15th century and has been placed in the middle of the church since the redesign.
