Easter grave

An Easter grave is a baroque set altar that can still be found today during Easter in numerous South Tyrolean and Tyrolean churches. This cultural and historical peculiarity dates back to the 17th century and was intended to make the most important event of the Christian faith clear to the people of the church, the resurrection of Jesus Christ .
In the second half of the 20th century - especially in the 1970s - many Easter graves were declared "out of date" and stowed away. At the beginning of the 21st century, a reversal trend began and these treasures began to be retrieved and restored.
Well-known Easter graves include the one in the parish church of Patsch near Innsbruck, the one in the plague chapel in Imst and the one in the parish church of Telfes in Stubai .
There were also holy graves outside of the southern German-Alpine cultural area. From the first half of the 20th century some from the Münsterland, the Sauerland and above all from the Paderborn plateau are mentioned. In the Archdiocese of Paderborn there is an Easter grave in St. Kilian (Letmathe) . Some are still being built today in the St. Maximilian Church in Haren- Rütenbrock and in St. Martinus (Borsum) . or even in “historicist metropolitan churches” such as St. Afra (Berlin). The Metelen collegiate church has the remains of an Easter grave from the Baroque period, as does the St. Magnus church in Everswinkel . Another current holy grave is in St. Vitus ( Breitenworbis ). and in St. Mariä Himmelfahrt ( Schirgiswalde ).
The Stiftskirche Grauhof has a well-preserved baroque Easter grave from 1735.
The baroque Easter grave from Neuzelle Abbey, which has been largely recovered, is exhibited in its own museum.
