Parish Church of St. Kilian

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Kilian in Iserlohn - Letmathe is a neo-Gothic hall church in the Märkisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia . Popularly, St. Kilian is also called "Kiliansdom" or "Lennedom". Today's church is the largest hall church in the Märkisches Kreis and the seat of the pastoral association.

history

It is believed that parts of the previous church, which was demolished in 1914 and stood on the site of the current church, were built before the 14th century.

The foundation stone for the new building, which was completed in 1917, was laid on July 12, 1914. The construction work was delayed by the outbreak of the First World War . Sankt Kilian was consecrated on November 11, 1917 by Paderborn's auxiliary bishop Heinrich Hähling von Lanzenauer .

building

View from the southeast

The church was built from Westhofen sandstone . On the outside of the building there are rough rusticated cuboids, while on the inside there are hewn sandstone. The hall church has three aisles . The northwest tower has a height of 73 meters, of which the height of the tower spire is 19 meters. The church is entered through the tower portal. The tower is followed by a four-bay nave with a suggested transept. A two-storey sacristy is placed in front of the final choir .

Architect Joseph Buchkremer designed the church in the Westphalian hall churches with Rhenish building traditions.

In 1978 a major exterior renovation was carried out because the sandstone was attacked by weathering. In the course of this, the interior was fundamentally restored and adapted to the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council . The executive architect was Heinrich Stiegemann from Warstein.

The furnishings of the church are documented in terms of art history.

Bells

The bell of the church consists of four cast steel bells of the Bochumer Verein , cast in 1948. The bell is tuned to g ° -b ° -c'-es' and was hung on strongly cranked steel yokes, which had a negative impact on the sound of the bells. Since January 2019, the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher has been renovating the bells, with the bells ringing on straight wooden yokes in an oak bell cage. For the 100th anniversary of the parish fair in 2017, two small bronze bells were purchased for the roof turret, which will in future ring for the Angelus and the change.

organ

organ

The organ was rebuilt in 1938 by the organ builder Anton Feith (Paderborn) and rebuilt in 1979 by the organ builder Siegfried Sauer (Höxter). In 2001 a renovation was carried out by the Stockmann brothers . The slider chests -instrument has 49 registers on three manual works and pedal . The pedal and the swell are in the side galleries, the main and upper works are in the main housing on the middle gallery. The console has four manuals. The fourth manual is intended to enable the control of a choir organ that was to be built at a later date.
