The castle in Kirchschönbach

The Kirchschönbach Castle is a former aristocratic seat in the Prichsenstadt district of Kirchschönbach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen.

history

It is not clear when the previous building of today's castle was built. The Middle Ages were characterized by changing rulers for the village, the Ebrach monastery was followed by the Fuchs von Bimbach in the 15th century . In the 16th century, the Lords of Wichsenstein received the village. Only under their rule does a castle become tangible in the village. In the course of the German Peasant War , however, it was destroyed in 1525 and initially not rebuilt.

This only changed in the 17th century. In the meantime the barons of Guttenberg had come to the village. Around 1700 the Würzburg court architect Joseph Greissing (also Greising) rebuilt the palace on the site of the old one in the Baroque style. It was not until 1789 that the Lower Franconian property was sold to the Duchy of Würzburg , and Kirchschönbach Castle also came to the bishopric. In the course of secularization , the bishopric was dissolved in 1803, and the castle was used as the Electoral Palatinate, and later the Royal Bavarian Forest Office.

In 1874, Count Friedrich Carl von Schönborn-Wiesentheid acquired the property. The house also changed hands more frequently in the following years before it was handed over to the Oberzeller sisters in 1923 . From 1926 on, they set up the so-called Marienhaus here, which takes on the social tasks of the Congregation of the Holy Childhood of Jesus in Würzburg. In 1991, the outer skin was extensively renovated and the architectural structure was secured. The castle is classified as a monument, the remains of the previous building in the ground as a ground monument.

Until 2018 there was a center for spirituality, art and culture in the castle, which was run by the Oberzell sisters. The castle has been empty since then.

description

The castle is surrounded by a spacious park. It is two-story and has twelve window axes on four. The complex ends with a wide hipped roof . Flat risalits connect the windows of the respective floors. Profiled window frames also structure the facade, and cornice canopies were also installed.

The corners of the building are emphasized by corner pilasters that end in Tuscan capitals. The system's portal is centrally located on the garden side. A blown gable closes it off at the top. A Schönborn coat of arms was also attached here. Two pilasters on high plinths frame the portal, while a wide flight of stairs leads to the entrance. Inside, some halls are stuccoed , the so-called ladies' salon on the upper floor has a richly ornamented marble fireplace.
