The Speckfeld castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle on a wooded 420  m above sea level. NN high mountain cone, called "Schlossberg", about 2550 meters northeast of the market market Einersheim in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen in Bavaria .

history

The castle was probably built around the year 1200, the overlords of the complex were the bishops of Würzburg and Bamberg. From 1226 it was owned by the Counts of Speckfeld, they were followed by Ludwig von Hohenlohe in 1330 and Johann von Hohenlohe-Speckfeld until 1399 , from 1412 to 1713 it belonged to Friedrich III. Gift of Limpurg . In the course of the Peasants' War , Speckfeld Castle was destroyed on May 16, 1525 and then rebuilt. Another destruction took place in 1558 when a fire destroyed the north and east sides of the castle. It was then rebuilt in 1580. The Thirty Years' War (1618 to 1648) also left its mark on the castle when it was looted several times by Swedish troops and imperialists. It was also restored afterwards in 1624. The owner Vollrath Schenk zu Limpurg-Speckfeld moved in 1693 to his new Einersheim Castle in the town of the same name and left Speckfeld Castle as a mansion. In 1711 a daughter of the Limpurg-Speckfeld family married the Dutch Count von Rechteren , and from 1745 the family called themselves von Rechteren-Limpurg-Speckfeld. Then the hilltop castle began to fall into disrepair and was partially demolished and used as a quarry.

The castle ruins are owned by the Bavarian State Forests, and the remains of the castle have been restored since 1991. The castle site is registered as a monument D-6-75-148-19 "Speckfeld castle ruins" and as a ground monument D-6-6327-0008 "Speckfeld medieval and modern castle ruins" by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .

legend

After the castle was burned down in the Peasants' War, the legend went around that there is a treasure among the ruins. One farmer claimed that the treasure could be found under a hazel bush and even called in the bishop to get permission to dig up the treasure. The bishop is also said to have given permission and sent two servants to help with the elevation. But nothing was found and the farmer was laughed at in the whole area.
