Today's Castell Castle is an aristocratic seat in Castell in Lower Franconia . The complex's buildings were built in the 17th century on the site of a former free courtyard. The castle is located in the middle of the village and is on the Schlossplatz street and is inhabited by the family of the Princes zu Castell-Castell .

history

Two different castles have existed in Castell since the Middle Ages, on the one hand the Upper Castle , which was the ancestral seat of the von Castell family, and on the other hand the so-called Lower Castle . The family lost this complex in 1328 to the Burgraves of Nuremberg , who later became the Margraves of Brandenburg. The castle was destroyed in the Peasants' War of 1525 and fell into ruin. When Wolfgang Dietrich zu Castell-Remlingen exchanged the territories of the margraves , the ruins came back into Castellian possession in 1684.

Wolf Dietrich zu Castell needed a castle after taking possession of the place, as both others were destroyed. However, its location was further to the west of the village in order to better implement the baroque concept of representation. A former Freihof was chosen as the new castle grounds and construction began in 1687. The master builder was Johann Peter Sommer (1650–1697) from Künzelsau . The new lower castle was completed in 1691 under the supervision of Hans Weireitter.

The baroque three-wing complex of the palace was the first of its kind in Franconia . A pleasure garden was created around the castle, which was converted into an English landscape garden in the 1820s. Changes to the garden were made around 1870 when Carl von Effner expanded the park with the riding arena, the stable and the so-called Grafensee. Before that, in the years 1863–1869, the palace complex had been changed in the neo-baroque style.

In the following centuries only necessary renovations were carried out. Today the lower castle is inhabited by the Count Castell family. The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments classifies the castle as a monument under the number D-6-75-116-21. The archaeological findings of the earlier, baroque gardens are listed as a ground monument.

description

Park side

The palace was built as a three-wing complex in the early Baroque style. On the southern side of the village, it ends with a gate. It consists of three two-storey pavilions crowned by mansard roofs. They are connected by much lower, flat-roofed connecting structures. The arched gateway is located in the middle pavilion. It has rustic garments and is crowned by a triangular gable roof with a coat of arms. The connection between the Castell and Hohenlohe-Langenburg family is shown.

The main building of the castle is two-story and covered with a mansard roof. The two side wings that are attached to the south of the main building also have two floors. Fourteen window axes and a central flight of stairs structure the building on the south side of the garden. The garden is an English landscape park, on its southern branch the so-called Grafensee was created.
