The Schloss Marktbreit (also being Native Castle ) is a former noble residence in the Lower Franconian market wide in Kitzingen . It is located in the middle of the small town on Schlossplatz.

history

The history of the castle in Marktbreit begins with the year 1580. In that year Baron Georg Ludwig von Seinsheim built the complex. As a builder, he probably brought in Fugger architects from Augsburg . However, the castle was not inhabited by the builder, but served as a residence for the baron's wife. The princes of Schwarzenberg , who succeeded the von Seinsheim as village lords, then converted the building into a representative office building.

Its use as an administrative building was retained even after the smaller principalities were abolished through mediatization in 1806. King Max I of Bavaria, to whom Marktbreit had now fallen, set up the Marktbreit district court in the castle. After a judicial reform, the Marktbreit district court sat here . It was disbanded in 1932. During the Nazi era, the building served as a labor camp from 1934 to 1945.

After the war, the facility was used as a school building and city library. In addition, non-profit institutions were housed there. The building was completely renovated at the end of the 20th century. Today parts of the ground floor and the cellar are rented to a restaurant.

Marktbreit Castle is classified as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments . In addition, the underground remains were classified as a ground monument. The castle is also part of the Altstadt Marktbreit ensemble .

description

The castle has an almost square floor plan and has three floors. A square stair tower was added to the east of the palace . The facade of the complex is richly structured. In addition to horizontal bands and cornices, volute gables were attached here, which are crowned by spheres. The ridge on the facade side is also divided by two five-meter high pyramids .

The windows of the castle are divided by stone cross posts and close at the top with straight, profiled canopies. The central portal is located , which can be reached via a wide staircase. It has a skylight window and is flanked by columns, pilasters and ornamental panels. A Bavarian lion coat of arms above the portal was only added in 1853.

Inside, the castle is divided into two parts by a central plank, on which the rooms are lined up. The official area was originally set up on the ground floor, while the bailiff lived on the upper floor. In addition, there was a small chapel in the upper area .
