City parish church of St. Augustine, towers

The Catholic parish church of St. Augustine in Dettelbach am Main, Lower Franconia , emerged from a former knight's castle. The two unequal towers are striking for the church, which can be seen from afar. To get into the large square tower, you have to climb the smaller round tower and walk over the wooden transition.

history

Redesigned interior
View of the organ
  • The large square tower dates from around 1444.
  • The construction of the church began on August 11, 1489.
  • Construction was completed in 1503.
  • The smaller round tower was added in 1578/79.
  • The west choir was built in 1769–1774.
  • In 1886–1889 the baroque style was replaced by the neo-Gothic style under the pastor Friedrich Roth for around 20,000 marks. The church was painted artfully built three new altars and on September 22, 1889 consecrated .
  • In 1966/67 the neo-Gothic remodeling was reversed, the church was extensively renovated and a popular altar was built. The redesign took place in restrained, simple forms based on designs by Hans Döllgast . The church interior was also oriented to the east. The artist Carl Clobes created the modern glass windows in the choir room.
  • In 2009–2011, the interior design by Hans Döllgast was completely removed as part of a renewed renovation. Karl Clobes' choir windows were also removed, but reused in the design of the new vestibule. The liturgical places were redesigned and a new winged altar was created by the Leipzig painter Michael Triegel .

Redesign from 2011

Access is on the west side. In the entrance area there is a Gothic sculpture of St. Sebastian . He is the city patron of Dettelbach. A wide corridor leads to the altar. A gold-colored chandelier hangs from the ceiling above the font. This is followed by another gold-colored twelve-tower chandelier hanging from the ceiling. When opened, the winged retable in the altar area by Michael Triegel from 2010/11 shows scenes from the life of Augustine in a realistic style : on the left Augustine explores the secrets of the Trinity, on the right he studies the Pauline letters, in the middle is the aged Augustine of divine love enveloped. When closed, the reredos shows a closed green door in an older wall that leads into a gold-shimmering room.

organ

In 2013 the church received a new organ, as it was found during renovation work that the previous organ was in such bad condition that repairs no longer made sense. The new organ was built by Franz Heissler GmbH from Bad Mergentheim-Markelsheim . The material used was an instrument that had previously been in the Kilianeum in Würzburg and was no longer needed there.
