The church in Bibergau

The parish church of St. Simon and Judas Thaddäus is a place of worship in the Bibergau district of Dettelbach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen . The church stands on Lindenstrasse in the middle of the village and is now part of the Kitzingen deanery .

history

A Christian community in Bibergau was probably formed relatively late. Until the 12th century, the church in Euerfeld took care of the community. Protestantism established itself in Bibergau in the 16th century and the population had become almost entirely Protestant by 1576. The faithful were now looked after by the Andreaskirche in Schernau . This filiation lasted until 1629.

In the meantime Bibergau had become Catholic again and the population had grown faster. Those responsible began to build the first church in the village in 1630 right next to the castle . Around 1700 a large church tower clock was installed, which had been built by a clockmaker from Würzburg for the price of ten guilders . The church community and the local population shared the costs.

On December 6, 1860, King Max II of Bavaria elevated the church to a curate and the church was no longer a daughter church of Euerfeld. This was preceded by the so-called parish foundation of Katharina and Bonaventura Schmitt from the years 1853/1854, which made possible the establishment of the curate with their money. On February 2, 1861 Bibergau finally became an independent parish. The bishop of Würzburg was allowed to appoint the pastor.

The church was damaged by fire in 1845 and the damage was repaired in 1846. In 1930 the sacristy was added to the church. With the influx after the Second World War , the community grew and in 1960 the church was expanded by five meters to the west. Between 1979 and 1981 Walter Väth from Würzburg carried out another expansion. The church was extensively renovated in 1985 on the outside and in 1991 on the inside.

architecture

The church is a simple hall building with a large choir tower. The choir has moved in and has a square floor plan. The Julius Echter Tower with its four floors is the oldest structural element of the church. The many extensions of the 20th century shape the building. The nave has a flat ceiling and three window axes. It was created in its present form in 1733.

Altars

The central high altar in the choir consists of several elements that were created in different times. In 1763 the artist Michael Becker created the two fully plastic assistant figures of Saint Simon (left) and Judas Thaddäus (right). The altar sheet was added in 1847 and extensively restored in 1909 by the Würzburg artist Franz Wilhelm Driesler . The Agnus Dei was attached to the tabernacle . The altarpiece shows the baptism of Jesus by Johannes Baptist in the Jordan.

The superstructures of two side altars to the left and right of the choir arch were added to the church in 1911. On the north cross altar there is a picture of Jesus on the cross . On the south side is the Marien Altar with the representation of Maria Immaculata . Both altar leaves were painted around 1831. On the extracts from the side altars the Heart of Jesus (north) and the Heart of Mary (south) are shown.

Bells

The ringing of the Simon and Jude Church consists of a total of three bells. The oldest and smallest comes from the 19th century and was probably poured in the course of the elevation to the parish . Two more bells had to be melted down during the Second World War, and the community only received a replacement in 1950.

Further equipment

The oldest parts of the furnishings are the two epitaphs of the village lords of Bibergau. One from 1490 shows the late Magdalena Hasen von Gnodstadt . The epitaph for Jörg von Fronhofen and his wife Sibilla dates from the 16th century . Jörg von Fronhofen replaced the Knights of Bibergau as village lord in 1516 and died in 1548. Both grave monuments are on the south side of the nave.

A wayside shrine on the north wall of the nave with the crucifixion of Jesus dates back to 1710 . The figures of Johannes Baptist and Saint Joseph were also created in the 18th century. The pulpit was built in 1765 and comes from the workshop of the Dettelbach artist Michael Becker. The body contains the figures of the four evangelists, on the cover there is a plastic dove. The back wall of the body is decorated with the Jesus monogram IHS .

14 Stations of the Cross from 1870 run through the nave of the Simon and Jude Church. The figures of Laurentius and a statue of the Madonna by Philipp Keck date from the 20th century. In 1901 the Sacred Heart figure came from the Schiestl brothers to the church. The organ with 15 registers was created in 1952 by the Weiss company from Zellingen and expanded by a register in 1981.
