Volker Roth (born February 1, 1942 in Chemnitz ) is a former German football referee . From 1995 to 2010 he was chairman of the DFB referee committee. Roth was also a member of the UEFA Referees Committee.

Life

Roth led his first Bundesliga game on May 6, 1972 with the game VfB Stuttgart against 1. FC Köln . From the 1974/75 season to 1986 he was regularly used in the German football upper house. International highlights were the 1984 European Football Championship in France and the 1986 World Football Championship in Mexico , which marked the end of his active refereeing career. At the European Championship in 1984 he was given the honor of leading the opening match between hosts France and Denmark in Paris . In this game he sent France defender Manuel Amoros off the pitch, which earned him criticism in France.

At the 1986 World Cup, he first headed the preliminary round match between England and Portugal , then the round of 16 between Brazil and Poland .

His last Bundesliga game on April 22, 1986 in Bremen's Weserstadion between Werder Bremen and FC Bayern Munich caused a lot of talk. With a win two game days before the end of the season, the Bremen team brought the championship to the Weser for the first time since 1965. When the score was 0-0, Roth gave Werder a controversial hand penalty in the 90th minute. Michael Kutzop , who was considered the league's safest penalty taker, shot the penalty against the post. Bremen missed the last chance to become champions on the last day of the match; Bayern secured the 1986 title.

After his active career, Roth remained with the DFB as a referee instructor . Until May 21, 2010 he was chairman of the DFB referee committee, which from 2005 had to deal with the betting scandal surrounding the Berlin referee Robert Hoyzer . Roth is the recipient of the DFB's Golden Badge of Honor.
