Alfred Birlem

Alfred Birlem (born January 10, 1888 , † April 13, 1956 ) was a German football referee .

Birlem took part in the soccer world championships in Italy in 1934 and in France in 1938 . At both tournaments he was the oldest of the referees at 46 and 50, respectively. In 1934 he led the first round game between Spain and Brazil (3-1) and was assistant to the quarter-finals between Austria and Hungary (2-1). In 1938 he stood on the line in the first round match between France and Belgium (3: 1) and whistled the first round replay between Cuba and Romania (2: 1). At the 1936 Summer Olympics soccer tournament in Berlin , Alfred Birlem led the bronze medal match between Norway and Poland (3-2).

In total, Birlem headed 21 international matches between 1927 and 1939.

Alfred Birlem directed the finals for the German soccer championship in 1931/32 between FC Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt and between Fortuna Düsseldorf and FC Schalke 04 in 1932/33 . Two years later he was referee in the first German cup final  - the so-called Tschammer Cup  - between 1. FC Nürnberg and Schalke 04.

As an active player, Birlem worked for Viktoria 89 Berlin .
