Youth and beginnings in football in Duisburg

In his childhood, Hennig lived in the Duisburg district of Meiderich and began playing football on the street in the immediate post-war period. This happened under very simple conditions and without suitable footwear until he received the appropriate equipment for his feet from his circle of friends and was encouraged to register in the youth team of Meidericher SV (today MSV Duisburg). He tried his hand at the right winger position for a few years and benefited above all from his speed. In February 1954 there was a decisive turn in the still young career of the then 18-year-old when he was the referee of a junior meeting in Hamborn . Although his time as a player ended at the same time, as a referee he revealed his great potential.

Career as a referee

Hennig headed a total of 161 games in the 1st Bundesliga between 1964 and 1982 , with which he temporarily topped the ranking of referees with the most managed first division games, and with the start of the 2nd Bundesliga 1974 to 1982 a total of 52 second division games. Hennig was on the FIFA list between 1979 and 1982 and headed three international A matches and two European Cup matches. At the end of his career as a DFB referee, he headed the 1982 DFB Cup final between FC Bayern Munich and 1. FC Nürnberg (4-2). Following his active career, Hennig became a referee observer .
