DFB Cup 1972/73

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1973 DFB Cup winner was Borussia Mönchengladbach , whoeliminateddefending champions FC Schalke 04 in the round of 16. As in the previous year, the 1973 eliminations were played back and forth.

The final against 1. FC Köln was supposed to be the farewell game for Günter Netzer from the Bundesliga before he moved to Real Madrid . However , Netzer did not set up coach Hennes Weisweiler from the start, as he was already planning without him, which is why he placed Herbert Wimmer centrally in midfield and as captain. Some spectators asked Netzer to line up for the entire first half of the game. Weisweiler wanted to replace him at half time, but Netzer refused. Only in the extension of the final did Netzer change himself. He took off his training jacket, went to Weisweiler and said only briefly: "I'll play now." Before that, he had spoken to Christian Kulik , who was running out of strength. Shortly after the substitution, with his second touch of the ball, Netzer scored the winning goal to make it 2-1 for Gladbach. Netzer admits that he hit the ball the wrong way, in a sense accidentally scored the goal.

In the European Cup Winners' Cup , the Mönchengladbachers reached the semi-finals, in which they were eliminated against AC Milan .
