Dietmar Danner (born November 29, 1950 in Mannheim ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

His father Walter Danner played in the first team of VfR Mannheim from 1949 to 1951 during World War II and after his return from captivity . Dietmar Danner started playing football at Eintracht Plankstadt before moving to VfR Mannheim, where he made his debut in the regional league team at the age of 18.

In 1971, the left-footed player moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach , where the technician and endurance runner became a regular in the Bundesliga third in his first season and where he formed the midfield axis together with Rainer Bonhof , Günter Netzer and Herbert Wimmer . In 1973 Danner was fifth in the Bundesliga with Borussia and won the DFB Cup . After Netzer's move to Real Madrid and Bonhof's retreat into defense, Danner formed the midfield row of Borussia in the 1973/74 season together with Horst Köppel , Christian Kulik and Herbert Wimmer, which ended up in second place behind Bayern Munich. In the first half of the 1974/75 season Danner was rarely used due to injuries, in the second half of the season he was again a regular and won his first German championship title. On May 7, 1975 in Düsseldorf and May 21 in Enschede, Danner was in the two finals of the UEFA Cup ; Borussia Mönchengladbach became the first German team to win the UEFA Cup after beating FC Twente Enschede 5-1 in the second leg . In the 1975/76 season Danner was in all 34 games and won the German championship for the second time. While Danner had played 149 games in his first five years at Borussia, after problems with the inner ligament and the meniscus, only thirty games were to be added in the next four years. In his third championship in the 1976/77 season he was only used three times, in Borussia's second UEFA Cup victory , Danner was substituted on for fifteen minutes in the final first leg.

In the German national team Danner came to six international appearances in the period from 1973 to 1976. His sixth and last international game was the semi-finals of the European Football Championship in 1976 , when he was substituted at half time against Heinz Flohe . Danner was never able to build on the club's performances in the national team, but he also regularly had to fight injuries.

He continued his career as a professional footballer in the 1980/81 season at FC Schalke 04 with 19 appearances, he was relegated with the Schalke players from the Bundesliga. From there he moved to 1. FC Saarbrücken for a year . He ended his football career in 1982/83 after a year with 17 league appearances (1 goal) at Linz ASK in Austria.
