← European Cup Winners' Cup 1972/73 |
The 1973/74 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 14th draw of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 32 club teams from 32 associations took part in the competition. Among them were 26 national cup winners, including defending champion AC Milan, who had also become Italian cup winner again, as well as 6 defeated cup finalists (CS Fola Esch, SK Rapid Wien, Pezoporikos Larnaka, PAOK Thessaloniki, Beroe Stara Sagora and MKE Ankaragücü). Since the cup finalist Juventus Turin had become Italian champions and thus qualified for the 1973/74 European Cup , Italy was only represented by one team. Albania have not reported any team this season.
From Germany, the DFB Cup winner Borussia Mönchengladbach and the FDGB Cup winner 1. FC Magdeburg , from Austria ÖFB Cup finalist SK Rapid Wien and from Switzerland FC Zurich at the start.
This European Cup season brought the only success of a team from the GDR in the European Cup. 1. FC Magdeburg, coached by Heinz Krügel , defeated AC Milan in the final, preventing them from defending their title. The final in Rotterdam took place in front of 4641 spectators. This is the smallest crowd to date at a European Cup final.
The top scorer was Jupp Heynckes from Borussia Mönchengladbach with a total of eight goals.
mode
As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shoot-out.
