Helmut Gaube

Helmut Gaube (born February 22, 1946 ) was a football player at 1. FC Magdeburg , for whom he played in the GDR Oberliga , the highest East German football class, and with whom he was three times GDR champion and in 1974 won the European Cup Winners' Cup .

Athletic career

Until he was 19, Gaube played for the tractor company sports club in the small community of Niederndodeleben just outside Magdeburg. In 1965, 1. FC Magdeburg, the region’s soccer focus, took over the talented defender and initially used him in the 2nd team and in the reserve team. On the 17th matchday of the 1968/69 season, March 12, 1969, Gaube was used in the 75th minute of the encounter Wismut Aue - 1. FC Magdeburg as a substitute for Wolfgang Seguin for the first time in the league team. There were two league games this season, and eleven league games in the next season. After only three league games in 1970/71, Gaube won his first title with FCM in the 1971/72 season, which was champion of the GDR league. Gaube was involved in this success with eight point games. In the following season, Gaube was not used in the league at all and also missed Magdeburg's 1973 cup win.

When 1. FC Magdeburg became champions again in 1973/74, Gaube also had a share in the success with eight league games. On May 8, 1974 Gaube celebrated the greatest success of his football career by winning the European Cup Winners' Cup. In the game that won 2-0 over AC Milan , Gaube took the position of central midfielder. Before that, he had only played the quarter-final first leg against Beroe Stara Sagora (2-0) of the eight games up to the final .

In the 1974/75 season Gaube was once again with 1. FC Magdeburg GDR champions, with only six league games, his share was relatively small. He played his last game in the league on the 7th match day, September 27, 1974, in the encounter 1. FC Magdeburg - Hallescher FC Chemie (2-0). The last competitive game was the cup game FC Hansa Rostock II - 1. FC Magdeburg (1: 2) on October 6, 1974. After that, Gaube ended his career at the age of 29 for health reasons after 38 games (1 goal) in the top division of the GDR as a high-performance athlete.

Helmut Gaube remained in the Magdeburg sports scene. In 2003 he was still leading the soccer team at Magdeburg University as a coach in the final round of the student cup. As a qualified sports teacher, he was employed full-time at the university's sports center.
