← European Cup Winners' Cup 1962/63 |
The 1963/64 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the fourth edition of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 29 club teams from 28 countries took part, including defending champion Tottenham Hotspur , 23 reigning cup winners and four defeated cup finalists (Olympique Lyon, Celtic Glasgow, Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Linzer ASK). Hungary sent the runner-up again with MTK Budapest , as there was a national cup competition only from 1964. Tottenham Hotspur qualified as defending champions.
From Germany, the DFB Cup winner Hamburger SV , from the GDR the FDGB Cup winner BSG Motor Zwickau , from Austria the ÖFB Cup finalist Linzer ASK and from Switzerland FC Basel .
Noteworthy was the 16: 1 success of winners Sporting Lisbon over APOEL Nicosia from Cyprus, the European Cup game with the highest number of goals to date. Sporting's race to catch up against Manchester United in the quarter-finals was also impressive . After a 4-1 defeat at Old Trafford Stadium , the Portuguese won the second leg against the Englishmen, trained by the legendary Matt Busby - who had Bobby Charlton , George Best , Denis Law and Nobby Stiles in their ranks - 5-0.
Since the first final on May 13, 1964 in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels in front of just 3,000 spectators ended 3: 3 after extra time, a replay was necessary two days later in the Bosuil Stadium in Antwerp. Sporting Lisbon beat MTK Budapest 1-0. João Morais scored the winning goal with a directly converted corner kick. The goal, which went down in football history as o Cantinho do Morais, is unique in the European Cup finals.
The top scorer was Mascarenhas of cup winners Lisbon with eleven goals.
mode
As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after extra time in the second leg, a playoff was played on a neutral pitch. The away goals rule did not yet apply. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. However, if the score was tied after extra time, a replay was scheduled because a penalty shoot-out was not yet planned.
