Helsingin Palloseura ( German: Helsinkis Ballverein ), also known under the abbreviation HPS or in German-speaking countries as HPS Helsinki , is a Finnish sports club from the capital Helsinki . The club has departments for bandy , basketball , ice hockey and soccer . The latter in particular was particularly successful with nine Finnish championship titles.
Soccer
HPS was founded on November 29, 1917. A short time later, the football team was one of the strongest in the country, and in 1921 the team won the first Finnish championship. Seven more championship titles followed by 1935 before a long dry spell set in. In 1957, the last championship title to date was won. In the following season, the club appeared on the international stage for the first time. In 1962, HPS won a title for the last time with the Finnish Cup. Since the 1970s, the team has been going downhill, sometimes they only entered seventh class.

ice Hockey
The HPS ice hockey team made a name for itself nationwide in the late 1920s and early 1930s when the club took part in the final round of the SM-sarja in a total of five seasons and became Finnish runner-up in 1929, 1932 and 1934.
