Károly Sándor (born November 26, 1928 in Szeged , † September 10, 2014 ) was a Hungarian football player .

Career

Károly Sándor, who was born in the provincial town of Szeged , began his footballing career at MTK Budapest , a club where other Hungarian football greats such as Nándor Hidegkuti , Mihály Lantos and József Zakariás , all members of the so-called " Golden Elf " of Hungarians, were active . Sándor remained loyal to the club throughout his career. He won his first championship with MTK in 1951. In 1953 and 1958, three more followed. The club won the Hungarian Cup in 1952. They were also very successful in the Mitropa Cup and won them in 1955 and 1963. In his last season at MTK, Sándor and his club almost won the European Cup Winners' Cup . The final at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels against Sporting Lisbon from Portugal ended 3-3 after extra time, with Károly Sándor scoring two goals and a replay having to decide the winner. In this second final game Sporting won 1-0 in Antwerp . This game was the last in Károly Sándor's career. In total, he played 379 league games for MTK Budapest, in which he scored 182 goals.

In the Hungarian national football team , Károly Sándor played in 75 international matches between 1949 and 1964. He scored 27 goals. His first major tournament was the World Cup in Sweden in 1958. At the World Cup four years earlier , when Hungary narrowly failed to win the first title, he was not in the squad. After most of the players in the "Golden Elf" either ended their career in the national dress or went to the West after the suppressed popular uprising , Sándor was given a regular place and was one of the pillars of the Hungarian team at the 1958 World Cup. But he too was eliminated of the reigning vice world champion after the preliminary round. At the World Cup, he scored a goal in the 4-0 win against Mexico in the last group game, making it 3-0. Four years later in Chile , the striker was back in Hungary's squad, but this time he failed to score, while his team only failed in the quarter-finals against Czechoslovakia .
