The Sliema Wanderers Football Club is a Maltese football club from Sliema .

history

Founded in 1909 as Sliema Wanderers FC , the club briefly called itself Sliema Amateurs in 1918 before reverting to its old name. The 1919/20 season brought the club the first Maltese championship. Several championships followed and in 1935 he won the national cup for the first time. In 1939 Sliema Rangers FC joined the club. In 1944, the club called itself Sliema Athletic for one season , and since 1945 it has been back to its current name.

The club was able to celebrate a total of 26 championship titles, making it the record champions on the island. In addition, they won 20 cups. In addition, you have been runner-up 30 times and can still book 19 finals in which you were defeated. The last cup win came in 2009 after a penalty shoot-out against Valletta , and in 2005 they won their last championship title with a six-point lead over Valletta . Internationally, the club made history in 1996 when, after 35 years of European Cup history, they won the first Maltese away win against Georgian runner-up Margveti Sestaponi .

The Wanderers' greatest rival is FC Floriana . In reference to the rivalry between the two Glasgow clubs Celtic and Rangers , the duels between the two clubs are referred to as the “Maltese Old Firm ”.

Stations in the European Cup

In their total of 39 appearances in the European Cup, the Sliema Wanderers were able to prevail four times against another team and in the 1968/69 season were the first Maltese club team to qualify for the second round in a European competition by sporting means. At that time, the Wanderers eliminated the Luxembourg Cup winner US Rumelange due to the away goals rule (1-0 and 1: 2) and three years later (1971/72) they impressively beat Icelandic champions ÍA Akranes (4-0 and 0-0) by. In the 1996/97 season, the Wanderers prevailed against the Georgian representative Margveti Sestaponi, which was no longer to be expected after the 1: 3 home defeat. But the second leg was won 3-0. For the last time Sliema Wanderers FC knocked out an opponent in the 2003/04 season with the Latvian champions Skonto Riga, benefiting from the away goals rule (2: 0 and 1: 3).

Other positive outstanding results were home wins like the 1-0 win against Panathinaikos Athens (1965) and two 2-1 successes against Boavista Porto (1979) and Partizan Belgrade (2000), but also the narrow 0-1 defeat at FC Barcelona ( 1980). The Wanderers were eliminated several times due to narrow results, such as 1974 against Lahden Reipas (2: 0 and 1: 4), 1976 against TPS Turku (2: 1 and 0: 1 due to the away goals rule), in 2013 against Xəzər Lənkəran (1: 1 and 0: 1) and in 2014 against Ferencváros Budapest (1: 1 and 1: 2).

Apart from that, however, substantial overall defeats (from the first and second leg) were not uncommon, for example against Randers Freja in 1968 (0: 8), 1970 against AB Copenhagen (2:10), 1972 against Górnik Zabrze (0:10), 1996 against Odense BK (1: 9) and 2003 against FC Copenhagen (1:10), just to name the overall results with at least eight goals difference. But the bitterest of all defeats was the 0:17 (0:12 in the first leg and 0: 5 in the second leg) against Swansea City in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1982/83.

The biggest win was the 4-0 against ÍA Akranes in the 1971/72 season and the biggest defeat the 0:12 at Swansea City in the 1982/83 season; the highest defeat ever that a Maltese club team had to accept in a European competition.
