Carmel Busuttil (born February 29, 1964 in Rabat ), called Il Bużu , is considered to be the most important football player in Malta . He was a midfielder and played 113 games for the national team. After his career as a soccer player ended, he became a soccer coach .
Career
The striker began his career at Rabat Ajax FC , where he won the Maltese Championship twice and the Cup once. After a year in Italy with AS Verbania, he played six years in Belgium with KRC Genk (322), four of them as captain, and was the club's top scorer in three seasons. In a total of 183 games for Genker, he scored 57 goals. He was the first Maltese to make it into a top European league. In 1990 he even made it to the top division. They could win the playoff games.
In 1994 he returned to Malta and played for the Sliema Wanderers from then on . In 2002 he ended his career.
In 2003 he was elected “Golden Player” of Malta, the most important Maltese player of the past 50 years. With 23 goals, which he scored in 19 years and 111 games for the national team, he holds the Maltese record. He was also voted Malta's Footballer of the Year twice (1983, 1986) and was the first Maltese to reach 100 caps.
Career as a coach
After hanging up his football boots, he became a football coach at Maltese private schools. In addition, he briefly coached the teams St. Lucia FC and Pietà Hotspurs . Then he opened his own football school, the "Bużu Football School", and was temporarily assistant to national coach Horst Heese . He was also responsible for the U23 selection.
