European Champion Clubs' Cup 1963/64

The European Cup of National Champions 1964/65 was the 10th edition of the competition. 31 club teams took part, including 30 national champions from the previous season and the defending champions with Inter Milan .

The participants played in a pure cup mode with (except for the finals) back and forth games for the crown of European club football. In the event of a tie, an additional playoff was played. If there was a draw after extra time, the game was decided by drawing lots or by tossing a coin. The victim of a decision by tossing a coin was 1. FC Köln in the quarter-finals . The Cologne team had twice played 0-0 against Liverpool FC. In the play-off in Rotterdam it was 2-2 after 120 minutes. Heinz Hornig scored a goal that was not given during regular time. The game took place on deep ground in the rain. It came to the " coin toss of Rotterdam ". The first time the coin was tossed the coin got stuck vertically in the mud. After the second throw, the Liverpoolers were declared winners. In this play-off, Cologne defender Wolfgang Weber broke his leg in the 20th minute and played the game through to the end. At this point in time there were no player substitutions.

The final took place on May 27, 1965 in the San Siro of Milan in front of a good 85,000 spectators, with Inter Milan successfully defending its title.
