Armando Picchi

Armando Picchi (born June 20, 1935 in Livorno ( LI ), † May 26, 1971 in San Remo ( IM )) was an Italian football player and coach .

Career

Picchi started at AS Livorno in the position of Libero . He then moved to the SPAL Ferrara club , with whom he made his Serie A debut. After two years he came to Inter Milan under the coach Helenio Herrera and became director of the defense and team captain. He won three Italian championship titles with Inter , twice the European Cup and two world cups . His last club as a player was Varese FC .

On November 4, 1964, Picchi made his debut for the Italian national team at the match between Italy and Finland , making a total of twelve internationals . After he was seriously injured in the game Italy against Bulgaria on April 6, 1968, he had to end his playing career. From 1969 he was a coach, first in Livorno and then at Juventus Turin . Armando Picchi died on 26 May 1971 35 years from cancer, on the day of the first, broken off because of rain Fairs Cup Final first leg of Juventus against Leeds United . His successor in the coaching bench of Juve was the Czech Čestmír Vycpálek .

In Livorno , the Stadio Armando Picchi stadium is named in his honor .
