The 1977/78 European Cup was the 23rd edition of the competition. 31 club teams took part, including 30 national champions from the previous season and defending champions Liverpool FC, who received a bye in the first round. The final was played on May 10, 1978 at London's Wembley Stadium .

mode

The participants played in a pure cup mode with (except for the finals) back and forth games for the crown of European club football. In the case of a tie, the higher number of goals scored away counted first; if there was also a tie, the second leg was extended and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out was played immediately afterwards.

1 round

The first legs took place on 14./15. (Bucharest vs. Atletico M. / Reykjavík vs. Belfast) September, the second leg on September 28th / 29th (Belfast vs. Reykjavík) September 1977.
