Ajax - Panathinaikos, European Champion Clubs' Cup 1970/71 final

The 1970/71 European Cup was the 16th edition of the competition. 33 club teams took part, including 32 national champions from the previous season and the defending champions with Feyenoord Rotterdam .

The participants played in a pure cup mode with (except for the finals) back and forth games for the crown of European club football. In the case of a tie, the higher number of goals scored away counted first; if there was also a tie, the second leg was extended and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out was played immediately afterwards . The penalty shootout was selected as the decision maker for the first time this year and replaced the unfortunate coin toss . It was also changed that the away goal rule should apply in all rounds and not only in the first two as before.

The final took place on June 2, 1971 at Wembley Stadium in London in front of 83,000 spectators.
