Kokkolan Palloveikot (KPV) is a football club from the city of Kokkola in western Finland . The Finnish champions from 1969 will play in the country's top division, the Veikkausliiga , in the 2019 season .
history
The association was founded in 1930. KPV is considered the club of the Finnish-speaking residents of Kokkola, while local rival GBK ( Gamlakarleby Bollklubb ) is considered the club of the Swedish-speaking residents.
After KPV played second class for a long time, in 1966 they were promoted to the top division of Finland, which was then called Mestaruussarja . The team was able to establish itself there quickly. The greatest success was winning the championship in 1969 by three points over the Kuopion PS . In addition, KPV was runner-up in 1973 and finished third in two seasons. In 1979 the team had to take part in the relegation relegation, but was able to secure relegation there. A year later this was no longer possible. After KPV had finished the league in last place, they failed in the relegation and had to go into the second division after 14 years.
Two more times, in 1981 and 1989, they were able to return to Mestaruussarja, but the KPV was no longer able to stay there permanently. In the 1995 season, the first crash occurred in the third class Kakkonen . After rising again in 1997 and relegating again in 1999, he was promoted to the Ykkönen in 2004 , where KPV was active until 2011. In the 2009 season, the team reached the second place entitled to participate in the relegation to Veikkausliiga , but failed there at JJK Jyväskylä . She finished the 2011 season in penultimate place and was relegated to the Kakkonen for the third time. After four years in third division, they were promoted to the Ykkönen again in 2015 by winning the promotion match against FC Honka Espoo as champions of the North Group . In 2018 KPV reached the promotion games to Veikkausliiga and prevailed there against Turku PS .
In the Finnish Cup , KPV reached the final twice, in 1982 and as a second division team in 2006. Both finals were lost, however, in 1982 with 2: 3 against FC Haka and in 2006 with 0: 1 against HJK Helsinki .
