Kakkonen is the third highest division in Finnish football . The league is organized under the direction of Suomen Palloliitto .

In the league, 36 teams compete in three different groups, and play for promotion to the second division Ykkönen . The respective group winners and the best runner-up in the group determine two winners in play-off games who advance to the second division. The third to last teams in each group are relegated to the fourth division ( Kolmonen ).

The teams compete against each other twice during the season. There are three points for a win and one point for a draw.
