Reinier Johannes Maria "Nico" Rijnders (born July 30, 1947 in Breda , † March 16, 1976 ) was a Dutch football player .

Career

society

Rijnders started playing football at VV Baronie in his hometown of Breda . As a youth player, he moved to great local rivals NAC Breda in 1963 . There he played his first senior game in the cup game against Enschedese Boys on May 16, 1965 and scored the 2-1 winner in the last minute of the game. In 1968 he moved to the Go Ahead Eagles Deventer for a fee of 150,000 guilders . After just one season, Rijnders was signed by Ajax Amsterdam for 400,000 guilders . In his first season at Ajax, the central midfielder was national champion and cup winner . The following year Ajax was again cup winners and won the European Cup against Panathinaikos Athens . In this game, Rijnders suffered from a tightness in the chest and was substituted at half time by Horst Blankenburg . In the summer of 1971 Rijnders moved to Belgium for Club Brugge . On November 12, 1972, he collapsed clinically dead during a match between Club Bruges and RFC Liège . He was successfully resuscitated by club doctor Michel D'Hooghe, but then had to end his active career and was continued as an assistant coach.

National team

Rijnders played a total of eight times for the Dutch national team in 1969 and 1970 , but remained without a goal.

After the playing career

In 1974 Rijnders was coach of the lower-class Racing Club Harelbeke team . After another heart problem on Christmas Eve 1974, he was no longer able to do this job either. He never fully recovered and died in 1976 at the age of 28.
