Joseph Patrick "Joey" Jones (born March 4, 1955 in Llandudno , Wales ) is a former Welsh football player .

life and career

The Welshman began his playing career with the Welsh club AFC Wrexham . During this time he was also called up four times in the Wales U-23 selection . In 1975 he moved to Liverpool FC . With the Reds he won the English championship twice, the UEFA Cup once and was a member of the team when Liverpool FC won the championship cup. In 1978 he came back to Wrexham AFC. In 1982 he tried again in England . The defender signed with Chelsea , with whom he made it to the top English league in 1984. Despite initial boos from the blues fans, he was named the best Chelsea player of the year in 1983. After 91 games and two goals for Chelsea, he moved to Huddersfield Town in 1985 . He stayed with the Terriers for another two years before returning to his home club AFC Wrexham. Internationally, he played 72 times for the Welsh national football team , scoring three goals. He made his debut against Austria in 1975 . Jones ended his playing career at Wrexham in 1992. Jones had to undergo heart surgery in 2002. Until his operation he was a youth coach at "his" AFC Wrexham. In 2005 he published his autobiography Oh Joey, Joey! out. The Welshman was also voted one of the 100 best Liverpool players of all time by Liverpool fans.
