Eduard "Edi" Franz Krieger (born December 16, 1946 in Vienna ; † December 20, 2019 there ) was an Austrian football player (midfield). Originally from 1. FC Simmering, the defender won the championship and the cup twice with FK Austria Wien between 1969 and 1978, as well as three championships and a cup victory with FC Bruges, with whom he also made it into the final of the UEFA Cup and of the European Cup. At the 1978 World Cup he was an integral part of the Austrian national team, which inflicted the defending champion Germany the "shame of Córdoba". At the end of his career he played for VVV-Venlo and LASK.

Career

The trained painter and house painter began his career in Simmering , before moving to FK Austria Wien in 1968 at the age of 21 after an interlude with the team at the Simmeringer Waggonfabrik . With Austria, where he made his debut on the combat team in July 1969, he became champions in 1969 and 1970 . Helmut Köglberger , Robert Sara , Josef Hickersberger and Thomas Parits were among the stars of Austria at the championships won under Ernst Ocffekt . In 1971 and 1974 he was also a cup winner.

In 1975 he moved to Club Bruges in Belgium, which was coached by the “coach world champions” . In the most successful era of the club, he won with the team around René Vandereycken from 1976 to 1978 three championship titles in a row and the Cup from 1977. In addition, the team came into the final of the UEFA Cup of 1975/76 and the final of the European Cup National champion from 1977/78 . The Bruges lost 2: 3 and 1: 1, or in the championship final at London's Wembley Stadium with 0: 1 each to Liverpool. In the 1978/79 season the team started with extremely mixed results, the Club Bruges settled in the league around tenth place and was eliminated in the first round of the championship against Wisła Krakow , where Krieger was not there. That led to the farewell to Ernst Happel in November. After the preliminary round, Krieger said goodbye to the Belgians, where he only played five league games, only one of which over 90 minutes.

He moved to the Dutch first division club VVV-Venlo during the winter break , but they were relegated to the bottom of the table at the end of the season. The 32-year-old warrior then went back to Austria, where he played for LASK , who had been promoted to the first division again after a year of absence . He was a welcome addition to the Linzers trained by Adolf Blutsch and the team immediately took third place. The most prominent competitor was the one year older national striker Helmut Köglberger . In the following season it was only enough for seventh place in the ten league and in 1981/82 only for the last place, which did not lead to relegation, as the league was increased to 16 clubs. Nevertheless, Krieger then ended his career as a professional. He then played at FC Fano Wieden, who became champions of the 2nd Vienna league in 1983.

Krieger played a total of 25 times for the Austrian national team  - he made his debut on April 8, 1970 against Yugoslavia (1: 1). Krieger described the 3-2 win against Germany at the 1978 World Cup as his greatest success, after all, he played a key role in all three of his team's goals. When Berti Vogts scored 1: 1 and Hans Krankl 2: 1 , he delivered the flank. At 3: 2, Krieger intercepted a pass from Hansi Müller and played the ball on to Robert Sara, who then served the “Goleador” Krankl, who scored the “Austrian goal of the century”, which the ORF stadium reporter Edi Finger “ foolishly” at the time “Made. If Heinrich Strasser had n't played a failed back pass in the previous game against Italy, which was more of a template for Paolo Rossi , who didn't miss the chance and scored the 1-0 winning goal for the Italians, then the Austrians would be one to whom in retrospect A draw would have been enough to advance to the semi-finals.

After his career, he was initially able to realize his dream of having his own coffee house, but later suffered financial shipwreck, in the meantime had to earn his living as a fruit and vegetable dealer on the Viktor Adler market in Vienna and also worked in a friend's inn. He also successfully worked as a coach in the depths of Viennese football at clubs such as Ajax and Victoria, with whom he won championships in the lower classes. But he never obtained a full coaching license.

After a short stay in hospital, Eduard "Edi" Krieger died at the age of 73 after a long illness.
