The Austrian Football Championship 1969/70 was organized by the Austrian Football Association. The regional leagues east (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), middle (Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia) and west (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) served as the substructure for the national league . The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.

First performance level - national league

General

Championship with 16 clubs

As early as July 14, 1967, the ÖFB national board had decided to play the national league with 16 clubs from 1969/70, so only two clubs had to relegate in 1968/69, but all three champions of the regional leagues were allowed to rise.

Championship course or decision

As a year earlier, Vienna Austria won the championship in 1969/70 in a superior manner. Five rounds before the end of the season they were crowned Austria's football champions for the 10th time with a 0-0 draw at ASK Linz. One of the highlights from purple point of view was a 6-0 derby win against Rapid. Austria was able to qualify as champions for the 1970/71 European Cup, Innsbruck Cup winners were allowed to take part in the 1971 European Cup , Sport-Club and Sturm, who were left behind, represented Austrian football in the 1970/71 Messestädte-Pokal . The most successful club was the Innsbrucker Wacker, but they could not bring a 1-0 away win at Real Madrid in the round of 16.
The goal bonus campaign introduced in spring (15,000 schillings for the most powerful team in each case) was abolished because the idea had not brought the desired success. Fewer goals had been scored than in the autumn.

Incidents

  • On July 4, 1969, the ÖFB decided not to allow the Salzburg Association's motion to admit three non-Austrians, or this motion was removed from the agenda and decided to prepare a corresponding motion for the 1970 General Assembly. Furthermore, various conditions were imposed on some national league clubs and SC Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz's application for a license to be granted was rejected
  • The draw for the championship of the First Division took place on July 8, 1969, with the first round of the fall championship began on August 24 and ended on December 7. Since there were 15 clubs, 15 rounds were required in which one team was free from play. The draw for the Regionalliga Ost took place on July 10th, that for the middle in Leoben and West in Innsbruck on July 17th
  • The general assembly on April 26, 1970 was completed in 90 minutes, because the 25-page amendments to the statutes were approved by the presidents' conference on April 24; there was only a contest vote with regard to youth, with August 1st (and not, as originally proposed, January 1st) being the key date. The appointment of a commission for the introduction of National League B was rejected, and the decision that international football matches may not be broadcast directly on TV was repealed.
  • Record champion SK Rapid Wien remained well below expectations (especially in terms of points), above all, he did not manage to win against the Viennese competitors (only 3 draws), which brought him fifth and last place in this special ranking. In the short term (around the 25th lap, i.e. 5 laps before the end), Rapid was only in 11th place with only 22 points (although there was an outstanding match), which even in the media was “in danger of relegation” (e.g. also in the »Arbeiterzeitung Wien« of May 2, 1970, page 12, in the article to the left of the table) - but the Rapidler were not only able to win this addendum against SK VÖEST Linz (on May 13 with 6: 1) win, but still get 7 more points. - Austria Wien led the autumn table with 24 points, the spring table with 21 and the home table with 26 points; only in the away table were the Wiener Veilchen with 17 points "only" in second place behind the Wiener Sport-Club (although tied with this club and separated by a goal difference of 28:21 versus 27:21). The three relegated were (in a slightly different order) already after the end of autumn in the relegation places; SC Eisenstadt was able to overtake the Grazer AK and Innsbruck in the spring table, but the points collected were by far not enough to stay in the league (striking that the Burgenlanders were last in the home balance and sixth in the away balance). SK Austria Klagenfurt and FC Dornbirn 1913 remained without a win . Also interesting are the big differences among the Linz clubs: Linz ASK in 12th place "weak at home", but in 3rd place "strong away from home", on the other hand VÖEST on 4th place in the home table, but only 14th place in the away table - and thanks to 3rd place in spring, LASK also improved from 8th autumn to 4th place.
  • Austria Wien practically "gave away" the tickets for the match on September 6th against SV Austria Salzburg , because everyone who bought a ticket for the match in the European Champions Cup (September 17th against Dynamo Kiev ) received the "Entre" for the aforementioned national league match as a bonus (according to the website FOOTBALL IN AUSTRIA 5,000 visitors came to the Prater Stadium, the “Arbeiterzeitung Wien” writes in its edition of September 7th, page 12, of only 3,500).
  • Already after 2 rounds with a 0: 3 at the Wiener Sport-Club and a 0: 1 at home against Wacker Innsbruck there was a change of coach at the Salzburgers mentioned - Günter Praschak left, a coaching duo Josip Sikic / Rauscher was installed at short notice, but Shortly thereafter, Karl Schlechta came , who looked after the team for the first time in the 3-0 defeat at Vienna Austria on September 6th. The indirect trigger was a curious situation in the match against Innsbruck when Walter Seitl refused to take the position of Gerhard Filzmoser ( Roland Hirscher played as Filzmoser substitute from the 46th minute ).

Competing in the European Cup 1970/71

  • Master Austria Vienna did not get far in the European Cup: After qualifying against Levski Spartak Sofia (a 1: 3 on August 18, followed by a 3: 0 on September 2 in Vienna), the Spanish champions Atlético Madrid were too strong. After a 2-0 defeat on September 16 at the Manzanares Stadium in Madrid , there was a 2-1 defeat in the Prater Stadium two weeks later, although the Austrians had initially taken the lead 1-0 and were closer to a second goal.
  • Wacker Innsbruck also failed in the cup winners competition to Madrid, it was Real. For the time being, the Tyroleans had eliminated the Albanian club Partizan Tirana with a 3-2 home and 2-1 away win (16/30 September) - and then there was a sensation when on October 21 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, the blatant outsider , was victorious 1-0 with a goal from “Poldl” Leopold Grausam in the 22nd minute of the game. But on November 4, relatively late goals ( Jose Antonio Grande in the 79th and Manuel Bueno in the 85th minute) resulted in a 2-0 defeat at Innsbruck's Tivoli.
  • Two teams were also involved in the Messestädte-Pokal : While the Wiener Sport-Club were clearly eliminated in the first round (16/30 September) with a 2-0 home and 3-0 away win against Belgian representative Beveren Waas , Sturm Graz continued on the same dates against Ilves Kissat Tampere from Finland: An away 2: 4 was followed by a home 3: 0 at the Liebenau stadium in Graz. But here, too, the second-round opponent, defending champion Arsenal FC , was hardly defeatable, although the Graz black and whites were eliminated rather unhappily: On October 21, there was a 1 in Liebenau thanks to a goal by Heinz Zamut (50th min.) 0 victory, but on November 4 at London's Highbury , the "gunners" were with 2: Enforcing 0, where the 2: 0 (95th minute) in added time by one of Franz Reiter indebted and Peter Storey turned Handspenalty fell.

    Regional league middle

The WSG Radenthein won the championship title in the Regionalliga Mitte. Due to the draw on July 17th, the autumn championship started on the weekend of August 24th, the 13th (and last autumn) round was scheduled for November 23rd, with the 5th round (20/21 September ) but then (obviously due to the international match in Vienna's Prater Stadium Austria against the Federal Republic of Germany) in several stages (the game Grieskirchen against Rosental 0: 1 only on July 4th 1970), also from the 9th Round (18/19 October) a match (Grieskirchen vs. Ranshofen 1: 3) was only played on November 29th.

The championship decision was quite controversial, it was made in the match between ASK Phönix Hönigsberg and WSG Radenthein, which was held at a later date . The addendum had become necessary because Hönigsberg had to assign three players to the Styrian regional selection on the original date (May 17) and was therefore exempt from hosting the match. Hönigsberg lost 7-0 on June 28, it was exactly the result that Radenthein needed for the title. Ultimately, however, none of the committees involved could determine any misconduct, so that the ÖFB, which had been called by the WSV Fohnsdorf , which had lost its chance , decided on the final 0: 7 verification on July 19
