Player career

Oberliga Südwest, 1957 to 1963

In the round of 1957/58 Günter Kuntz completed his first thirteen games in the Oberliga Südwest for VfR Kaiserslautern . He scored six goals, but the team from Erbsenberg was relegated to the second league as penultimate. Kuntz, who was mostly used as a left winger, was able to immediately celebrate the championship in the II. Division in the southwest and thus the promotion. But also in the second attempt - in the 1959/60 round he played 27 games with six goals - he was relegated from the league with VfR Kaiserslautern.

Kuntz moved to Borussia Neunkirchen in Saarland in 1960/61 . In the last three rounds of the Oberliga era from 1961 to 1963, Borussia from the Ellenfeld teamed up with attacker Günter Kuntz to win the runner-up twice and the title in the southwest in 1962. With the parade tower Elmar May , Paul Pidancet , Rudi Dörrenbächer (37 goals), Karl Ringel and Kuntz, Neunkirchen won the Southwest Championship in 1962 with a goal difference of 102:29 and thus made it into the finals of the German soccer championship . After the Saarlanders failed in qualifying with 0: 5 goals at Eintracht Frankfurt in 1961, Kuntz only played one role in 1962. In the 2: 3 defeat at FC Schalke 04 , he stormed the left wing. In the third attempt, in 1963, he played five games alongside May, Ringel, Horst Berg and Pidancet - including the 3-0 home win against Hamburger SV - as well as against 1860 Munich and Borussia Dortmund . Overall, Günter Kuntz played 108 games with 47 goals in the Oberliga Südwest from 1957 to 1963. In the finals he came to seven missions.

Regionalliga Südwest 1963/64

Since only 1. FC Kaiserslautern and 1. FC Saarbrücken were nominated by the DFB from the south-west for the new Bundesliga for the 1963/64 round , Kuntz played with Neunkirchen in 1963/64 in the Regionalliga Südwest . In this round, Kuntz celebrated winning the championship in the regional league, thus making it into the promotion round and prevailing there against the favorites FC Bayern Munich . On June 20, 1964, he scored the decisive goal for the 2-0 away win at Bayern against Sepp Maier .

Football Bundesliga and Regionalliga Südwest, 1963 to 1968

The team of coach Horst Buhtz proved their performance in the 1964/65 round by reaching 10th place. Kuntz came to 20 missions and contributed seven hits. In the second season, Kuntz increased his personal record - 28 games with 13 goals - but the Borussia were relegated to the regional league as the penultimate. The Association for Movement Games won the championship in 1967 and again achieved promotion to the Bundesliga in the promotion round. But now Günter Kuntz was often in the runner row with Erich Leist and Günter Schock in action. In the Bundesliga, coach Željko Čajkovski mostly relied on the formation of Günter Kuntz, Erich Hermesdorf and Wolfgang Gayer in midfield . Kuntz recorded 32 games with two goals in the 1967/68 season when the black and whites from Ellenfeld were relegated back to the Regionalliga as 17th. After relegation Kuntz moved to Austria to FK Austria Wien and celebrated the two-time title win in 1969 and 1970 . He played 53 games in the league for Austria in which he scored 16 goals. In the European Cup of National Champions in 1969/70 he was in use in both games against Dynamo Kiev .

Finale

In the 1970/71 round, Kuntz returned to Borussia Neunkirchen in the Regionalliga Südwest and won the championship again with coach Kurt Sommerlatt and the outstanding midfielder Gerd Zewe . In the promotion round, however, the veteran who last acted as a libero was no longer used.
