Franz Wolny (born April 12, 1940 in Vienna ; † March 14, 2018 ) was an Austrian national soccer player.

Career

The later national team striker Franz Wolny grew up at FS Elektra Wien and Floridsdorfer AC . In 1960 he moved to the National League for SK Rapid Vienna , where he already knew how to convince in the 1962/63 season with ten goals in 16 games, so that on November 11, 1962 he made his debut in the national team under Karl Decker against Italy . In 1963/64 he was first Austrian champion with Rapid .

A year later, Leopold Šťastný brought him to FC Wacker Innsbruck . He scored the first two goals for Wacker when he made his debut at Innsbruck Tivoli in 1965 against ŠK Slovan Bratislava (2-1). In 1966 and 1967 he was the top scorer in Tyrol and became a crowd favorite. During this time he was part of the national team under Erwin Alge and made seven more international matches.

Franz Wolny, who was often accused of enjoying life a little too much, dropped a little in his scoring in the following years, but was able to prove himself again in the Innsbruckers' illustrious years. In 1970 the first ÖFB Cup victory was achieved , but Franz Wolny was excluded in the 60th minute in the 1-0 (through a goal by Hans “Buffy” Ettmayer ) in the final against LASK in front of 1,800 spectators. The first championship finally followed in 1970/71 , as SSW Innsbruck achieved two more titles in 1971/72 and 1972/73 , although the Viennese striker was only used sporadically in the last success. He spent his last two years in the league at FC Vorarlberg , where he had to relegate from the national league in 1974 alongside German star Rudi Brunnenmeier and Bruno Pezzey , who completed his first season here as a professional, and SK Austria Klagenfurt , For which he also shot the last three of his 93 first division goals.

From the 1978/79 season Franz Wolny was assistant coach of the Innsbruck team under Lajos Baróti and Peter Velhorn , and in February 1980 he took up the position of coach at Wattens-Wacker. In 1981 he was promoted to the 1st division and in 1982 and 1983 he was in the cup finals with the syndicate, where Austria and Rapid proved to be one size too big. After a few rounds in the following season he resigned and later looked after a few lower-class teams, including the SK Rum .
