The Austrian Football Championship 1962/63 was organized by the Austrian State Football League Association. The regional leagues East (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), Middle (Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia) and West (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) served as the substructure for the State League A. The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.
First level - State League A
General
Wiener Austria was able to dominate the championship in 1962/63 to a large extent and, especially in the second half of the season, clearly set itself apart from the first rival Admira. With three rounds to go, the Veilchen were already the champions and were able to celebrate the 1961-63 title hat trick, which so far only Rapid and Vienna had achieved. Overall, it was the eighth title as Austrian football champion of Wiener Austria. As a champion you could qualify for the European Cup of National Champions in 1964 , Cup finalist LASK was allowed to take part in the European Cup of Cup Winners in 1964 and Rapid represented Austria's football in the 1964 Messestädte Cup . Internationally, there was little to gain this season, only Rapid made it to the round of 16 against Racing Paris.
The championship started on the weekend of 25/26. August, the autumn passage was on 15./16. Ended December. Two weeks later than planned, namely on 16./17. March, started the second half of the season and was therefore only a week late on 15./16. June ended, whereby it was basically only about the descent, which was clarified on June 16. Just a few days earlier, on June 13th, Austria Klagenfurt was the first to be relegated after the 3-0 home defeat against the sports club. The remaining candidates ranged from tenth-placed Simmering to thirteenth Wacker Wien; but since all teams lost in the final round, there were no changes. There had been relatively few supplementary matches, although there were also curious dates: The game Rapid against Vienna from the 11th round scheduled for December 2nd was canceled because the field was unusable and was played on December 30th at 2 p.m. in Hütteldorf and brought a 1-0 victory for the guests. The missing matches of the 13th round were scheduled for December 23rd, although only Rapid against Austria Salzburg (3: 1) and the Linz Derby SVS against LASK (4: 2) could be played, while the 2 other games of the 13th round could be played Round Simmering vs. Admira (0: 4) and Vienna vs. Austria (3: 4) on March 9th and 10th respectively (see also an article in the section «Other»). "Normal" was the supplement date of May 23rd for the game from the 15th round (March 23/24), Austria Salzburg versus Austria Vienna (1: 4), but there were reports and contraindications from Austria Salzburg on the one hand and on the other hand given to the referee chairman Melzer, because the Salzburgers were of the opinion that the cancellation was wrongly made one day before the start of the game, and the referee Mayer who made the cancellation had the (alleged) statement that "the Lehen stadium is not ready for the state league", his competencies exceeded etc. - Referee chairman Melzer defended the early cancellation due to an instruction from the class committee to save the visiting team an unnecessary journey. However, he will report Salzburg official Sachs for insulting statements against the entire referee system in the television debate on Monday evening (March 25). Curiously, the class committee (in silence) has since canceled its instructions regarding earlier picking and ordered that the referees have to check the seats again two hours before the start of the game.
European Cup
Austria Wien failed because of Poland's master Górnik Zabrze ; initially there was a 0-1 defeat in Chorzów on September 18, 1963 (and the exclusion of Ernst Fiala , 55th min.), which was followed by a 1-0 win for the Viennese on October 2 in the Prater Stadium. There was no regulation about overtime, but a third match had to be decided - and this was already clear at the time of the second leg, it was again in Vienna and ended with a disappointment for Austria, which deservedly lost.
LASK competed in the preliminary round. The first LASK match, which was the first time in a compulsory competition at European level, took place on October 9, 1963, whereby Linz's 1-0 victory resulted in three exclusions ( Gerhard Sturmberger and two guest players) came. LASK was not given a chance for the second leg, but thanks to a great performance by goalkeeper Herbert Kitzmüller, a third match was forced with a 0-1 defeat.
For the time being, only the date of October 23, but not the venue, was fixed for this third match. The cities of Vienna, Linz, Duisburg and Munich were considered, but in the end Zagreb agreed to play in Linz (UEFA rejected a postponement of the date), and because after 90 minutes it was 1: 1 (0 : 1) and the extra time of 15 minutes did not change anything, according to the rules of the time, a drawing of lots was required, in which the coin thrown by the Swiss referee Guinard fell to the ground for the Zagreb team. With regard to the trade fair city cup, the state league initially only named the cities of Vienna and Linz (not specifically Rapid) as the responsible body, which did not correspond to the original provisions, but had also been handled in this way by other nations in recent years. Since this nomination was rejected, a protest at FIFA was announced.
In the end, Rapid Vienna came to the train, which eliminated with a home 1: 0 and away 3: 2 Racing Paris (September 11th / October 2nd). The French were decimated in the Prater Stadium from the 20th minute by injuring their striker François Heutte (exchanges were not yet possible) and had foregoed two important supports in the second leg in the Prinzenparkstadion. To do this, they again had to make do with ten men from the 7th minute due to the injury of left defender Umberto Melloni , but then met last year's winner FC Valencia , with an exchange of dates, after which there was the first match in Vienna. Despite a “good attitude” (quote from the “Arbeiterzeitung”) by the referee Obtulovic (ČSSR), Rapid only managed to score 0-0. The starting position before the second leg already indicated that Valencia had not lost a home game in the Exhibition City Cup for two years and that Rapid had a “handful of veterans (Hanappi, Gießer, Halla), a few average players and young, far from mature talents against a team of international standing ”had to compete. The Viennese lost 2: 3, had even taken the lead through Franz Wolny (6th min.) And he had also scored 2: 2 (66th), before Roberto Gil , known as Roberto , with a header (71 .) produced the final score.
Rapid Wien was also involved in the Rappan Cup (also known as the Rappan Cup ) on the "side front" , where it lost 2-0 to Standard on November 20 in Liège. In the return game on March 4th at Rapid-Platz there was a 0-1 defeat.
Others
A bribery scandal should also be uncovered during the interrogation of witnesses in the ÖFB house on Maria-Hilfer-Strasse (at that time the ÖFB was far from being in the Vienna stadium). The section heads of Wacker Vienna, Ludwig Hönig, and Wr. Sports clubs, Fritz Korpal, were involved. Hönig had claimed in the TV program "Sportstammtisch" that Kirpal had offered him 25,000 Schillings for a defeat of the sports club (meaning the match on June 16, 1963, which was won by the sports club 4-2). However, the goiter did not pass a verdict on October 9th (the "State League" had applied for a lifelong ban for both men), and they were not members of any club. Some of the statements made by Mr. Hönig during the questioning by the goiter differed from those that he had made during the TV show. On October 10, the goiter issued a lifelong ban. The case was not yet closed, and the goiter dealt with further questions
There was also a dispute over the match between Admira and Simmering, planned for February 20, 1963; First, a protest committee rejected Simmering's objection, but then (after referee Eduard Babauczek had picked the place ) the supplementary match was finally canceled (and it only took place on March 9, after further cancellations on February 27 and March 6) . Although without protest, the supplementary match scheduled for February 25 was canceled by referee Paul Schiller on February 22nd (and the other dates on February 27th, March 2nd and 6th were canceled; the match finally took place on March 10th).
Only the Toto society insisted on the date 2/3. March for the first second half of the season, because games 1 to 5, Rapid vs. Sports club, LASK vs. Austria Vienna, GAK vs. Admira, Vienna vs. Austria Salzburg and Simmering vs. SVS Linz were shown, but the ÖFB also stayed with the cancellation, and because only six of the 15 games recorded on the ticket were actually played, this 29th sports round was canceled
During the winter transition period there were several club changes, of which the following were outstanding: Hansi Buzek came to Austria from Vienna, Ernst Kozlizek , known as "Kozlizek I" , came from LASK and Walter Horak from FC Sochaux-Montbéliard to Schwechat. Austria Klagenfurt brought goalkeeper Hermann Pihorner from Rapid Vienna and Bernad Vukas from Hajduk Split.
watch TV
The extraordinary general assembly of the State League, which took place on August 18, 1962, decided that any TV broadcasts could only be fixed by the State League Game Committee and not by individual clubs.
statistics
- In terms of championships with 14 clubs, Austria was satisfied with the lowest number of points so far, although it must be conceded that the Veilchen had not given everything after fixing the title with two defeats in the two final rounds .
- After the autumn Austria was ahead with 23 points (11 wins, 1 draw, 1 defeat) ahead of Admira (19) and Rapid (17). With a strong finish, the Sport-Club (17 points) came first ahead of Vienna (16) and Austria and Rapid (15) with equal points.
- In the relegation event, it did not look in any way that Austria Klagenfurt could be affected, because the Carinthians were 7th with 12 points, although it should be noted that the last, Simmering, was only five points behind with seven points. The other two teams classified in the relegation places were Vienna (9) and GAK (8) - but also Wacker Vienna in eleventh (10 points) had a handicap - namely one on October 10 in the 1: 2 home defeat against the GAK caused the game to be abandoned, which resulted in a 0: 3 verification and, in the event of an event, a “poor ranking” in the event of a tie. The last three in the spring table were also relegated, with only the positions between Austria Salzburg and Wacker reversed: Wacker with 9, Salzburg with 8 and Klagenfurt with 5 points. The latter achieved a sensation with a 2-0 home win over Rapid Vienna on May 12, but no longer.
- Austria and the sports club were the best home eleven with 21 points each, while Austria was ahead (17 points). Austria was first in the table from round 4 until the end of the season.
- There were 97 home wins, 29 draws (twelve of them 0-0) and 56 away wins with 341 home and 239 away goals.
- The number of viewers of 1.205 million was higher than in 1961/62 (1.1 million), but there was a noticeable decrease in spring with 463,000 compared to autumn (742,000), whereby not only television, but also weaker performances were or were decisive should be.
