Career

The trained shoemaker Gerhard Sturmberger began his football career in his hometown at ASK Klagenfurt , where he played as a defender in the second-class Tauern League North . With the club he almost managed to qualify for the A-League delegation, only had to admit defeat due to the poor goal difference of WSG Radenthein . Thanks to his good performance, Gerhard Sturmberger was brought into the A-League by trainer Josef Epp for Linz ASK . He played as a defender for the Linzers for 14 seasons and wore the captain's bow from 1967 to 1973.

The greatest successes in Gerhard Sturmberger's career at LASK were winning the championship in 1964/65 and the ÖFB Cup in the same year. The double season was also the springboard for the Carinthian national team : his debut was on March 24, 1965 in a 2-1 away win over France . Sturmberger played a total of 43 international matches in Austria's defense until his departure in 1973, most of them in the era of team boss Leopold Šťastný , when he also played as captain. At the end of his career, he ran three more seasons with Rapid in the highest Austrian league until 1975 and then worked for smaller Upper Austrian and Carinthian clubs, including his parent club ASK Klagenfurt.
