The Austrian Football Championship 1965/66 was organized by the Austrian Football Association. The regional leagues east (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), middle (Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia) and west (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) served as the substructure for the national league . The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.

First performance level - national league

New name

Up until now the top division was called "Staatsliga", from now on it was called "Nationalliga" - and it wasn't just a name change, there were also new regulations. Accordingly, there should be more professionalism. There were the terms "contract and licensed players" for which monthly minimum compensation was set. In addition, each club required a full-time or licensed physical education teacher and, as a minimum, two assistant coaches. The lowest limits were that the sports facility had a capacity for 10,000 spectators with 1,500 seats and the club had to be based in a place which, including its catchment area (30 km in a radius), had at least 30,000 inhabitants. With 200,000 inhabitants in the same area, another club was able to obtain the national league license. The club was able to prove that in the year before the promotion from the regional league he had an average of 1,500 spectators per championship game; further evidence was required that it was economically orderly. So-called hand money, which had previously existed, was forbidden. At the beginning of July, the new "National League" established three senates (criminal and registration committee, tote and control certification).

Championship bonus

The National League Commission had decided to give the upcoming champions a bonus of 55,000 schillings, the eleventh placed should still receive 5,000 schillings. A total of 330,000 schillings had to be paid out.

The implementation of this project was only realized on August 18, 1966, when the former state league was finally dissolved in accordance with the application; so far the same motion had failed to win a majority in two previous meetings (the last one in March 1966). This decision brought the clubs the long-awaited placement bonuses. Bonuses were awarded: Master Admira (amounts each in Schilling) 70,000, Rapid 55,000, Austria 45,000, Sportklub 40,000, Austria Klagenfurt 35,000, Vienna 30,000 and LASK 25,000

General

The championship in 1965/66 was a three-way battle between the Viennese clubs Admira, Austria and Rapid. The former benefited above all from his new goalkeeper Dragomir Vukićević, who only conceded 14 goals in the first 25 games until his injury. At the winter break, Admira was with 26.8 goals and 21 points ahead of Austria (32:12; 20 points) and Rapid (28:11, 19 points). While LASK already had 13 points in ninth, the relegation ranks from tenth (GAK, 9 points) to last (Simmering, 6 points) were still fairly open.

The question of August Starek's eligibility to play , previously 1. Simmeringer SC , for Rapid was resolved practically at the last moment, namely on August 20, by the National League Control Committee in favor of the Hütteldorfer (they nevertheless started on August 21 with a defeat, namely a 1: 3 at Wiener Neustadt, where Starek met at the 1: 1 break). There was also a dispute about the new Admira goalkeeper Vukićević for the time being, because the Vienna had reported Admira for piracy.

The Jedleseer , who played in Maria Enzersdorf a year later and scored 1-1 in the first half of the season against the pursuers Rapid in the Prater Stadium (October 17th) and defeated Austria 3-1 in the last autumn round on their own facility in Hopfengasse , who had also landed an 8-1 victory over Wiener Neustadt (September 19), Rapid were able to defeat first in a direct duel in the 20th round on April 16, 1966 with 2-1 in front of 27,000 spectators in the Prater Stadium. Günter Kaltenbrunner with a direct corner and ex-Rapidler Peter Reiter (football player, 1937) (34th / 66th minute) scored for the black and white. Ultimately, a decisive victory, as Austria took themselves out of the race with three defeats in a row (Klagenfurt, Vienna and Rapid) and Admira only lost one point in the following six games (2-2 at ASK Linz on April 30th ) and brought the lead to the finish line.

As an Austrian champion, the club qualified for the European Cup of National Champions in 1967 , Cup finalist Rapid was allowed to take part in the European Cup of Cup Winners in 1967 and the Vienna Sports Club represented Austrian football in the Messestädte Cup in 1967 . The most successful club of the three was Rapid, which only failed in the quarter-finals on March 8 in extra time to Bayern Munich with 0-2.
In contrast, champions Admira and the sports club had to admit defeat in the first round: Admira failed at the Yugoslav club Vojvodina Novi Sad , with a 0-1 defeat in the match played in Vienna's Prater Stadium on September 7th. The second leg (September 20) brought a 0-0. SSC Napoli was a size too big for the sports club . Already after the home 1: 2 on September 1, the elimination was practically perfect, in Naples there was a 1: 3 (September 21).

In a press conference on June 23, 1966, FK Austria Wien announced a “community of interests” with the 1st Schwechater SC . In a board meeting the day before, Consul Manfred Mautner Markhof jun. , previous Schwechat President, has also been appointed to that of Austria, Schwechat itself will play in the Regionalliga Ost. Ernst Ocffekt has been appointed as the highest “Sports Director” , who will work out and also lead a joint training program; Both clubs will keep their previous names and club colors, but at FK Austria the club's initials will have the SC Schwechat emblem (beer glass) on their jerseys. This development caused a postponement of the national league draw in 1966/67, as the licenses still had to be awarded to the individual clubs (date July 8th), above all because Wr. Neustadt or Austria Salzburg the chance to be accepted into the national league. Both clubs had the same chances due to the point table drawn up by the ÖFB with roughly the same number of points, a larger audience pool spoke for the Salzburg team (but contrary to these predictions, the 1. Wiener Neustädter SC was preferred and did not need to relegate).
It was also reported that Vienna has bank debts of 240,000 schillings and the debt burden of LASK is 2 million schillings, but it was assumed that the granting of the license would be guided by “sporting reasons”.
The draw took place on July 11th in the ÖFB building in Vienna

Second performance level - regional leagues

    Regional League East

In the Regionalliga Ost, SC Wacker Wien won the championship title.
At the beginning of the season there was a problem with the relegation of the clubs SC Wacker Wien and Wiener AC from the state league to the Regionalliga Ost, because the fourth from last SV Deutschkreutz was sentenced to relegation to the Burgenland regional league. Before the start of the regional league championship in the summer of 1964, a decision was made that there were only three relegated clubs and that the league should be increased to 15 or even 16 clubs if necessary. On July 16, 1965, the board of the ÖFB dealt with the protest brought in by Deutschkreutz on July 5, whereby the latter decided that President Dr. Heinz Gerö should deal. However, since the registration and deregistration period for the transfers expired by such a date, this annoying matter turned into a farce. The new draw (championship start August 21/22 and end December 4/5) took place on July 12th. And nothing more changed in the given status.

    Regional league middle

In the Regionalliga Mitte, SK Sturm Graz, relegated in the 1964/65 season. secure the championship title again. The draw took place on July 19 - the dates were identical to the National League (start August 21/22, end December 4/5).

Championship course: The WSG Radenthein, represented since the beginning of the regional league in mid-1959/60, was in danger of relegation, was even in last place just before the end of autumn - there were heavy defeats in this phase of the season such as a 0: 5 at the upcoming champions Sturm Graz in the as notorious designated Gruabn (September 26), a home 0: 3 against Donawitz (October 3) and a 1: 6 at VÖEST Linz (November 21), to even more surprising defeats and points losses, especially on its own Investment. Only the home 5: 1 against Hönigsberg (November 28) let the factory athletes advance to 13th place.
Two of the three newcomers could not keep up , although the failure of Villacher SV, known as VSV , had comitragic features, because according to the report of the "Volkszeitung Klagenfurt" some players had an ultimatum to the club's board immediately before the home match on April 30th against Hönigsberg Asked for a premium increase, which the officials did not respond to and let young talent play along. One of the ringleaders was expelled from the club, another player was removed from the captaincy. The result was depressing 0: 7, and more slips followed. In the given line-up, the team was not competitive despite their efforts, although the team defied 2-2 at home in the penultimate round against the "pitiful performance offering" (quote: «Kärntner Tageszeitung») Meister Sturm (June 26th) .

In the Regionalliga West, SC Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz celebrated the championship title. As in the National League and the other two regional leagues, the championship began on 21/22. August, but it ended two weeks earlier (November 20/21) (because there were 2 fewer teams).

Austria Lustenau was renamed SVg Lustenau / Dornbirn because FC Dornbirn had left five players there. Nevertheless, Dornbirn continued to play independently. However, this syndicate only lasted the current game year.

    Vienna League

In Vienna, FC Wien was able to secure the championship title.
Before the start of the championship in question, the affected clubs FC Wien and Landstrasser AC had a protest against the evaluation of the match between ESV Brigittenau and Helfort, which was only played for the title and relegation area on July 5th, and ended 1: 1 had given. It claimed that "the two clubs had previously come to terms with this result". However, these protests were obviously ignored or rejected, since the championship 1965/66 was played according to the previous year's final table.
However, due to the fact that three relegated members from the Regionalliga Ost belonged to the Vienna Association, the number of clubs was (provisionally) increased from 14 to 16. In addition, contrary to previous draws, the association had the autumn championship this time without a break (previously the Vienna League on international match dates of the national team, at which various matches in federal state competitions took place, play-free), starting with the 1st round on 21/22 August and with the 15th round on 27./28. November. As a result of a merger with the lower-class club Gerngroß , ASV Germania Baumgarten was now called ASV Germania Gerngroß .
