The Urfahr Sports Association is an Austrian football club from the Urfahr district in the Upper Austrian capital Linz . The club colors are red and black. The SV Urfahr is the third oldest football club in the federal state of Upper Austria and currently (2015/16) plays in the eight-class 2nd class middle . Outside of the state, the club is generally known under the name SV Urfahr .

history

founding

A Dutchman of unknown name stopped in Linz in 1908 on his way home from Africa and taught young people from Linz bathing under the Danube bridge and the then still independent municipality of Urfahr the previously unknown football game in this region. Two goals were set up and youngsters from Linz played their first football match against those from Urfahr. When the Dutchman left, he left behind his leather ball and enthusiasm for this new sport.

After his departure, the boys who had played with the Dutchman became the soccer teams Linzer Sport-Club , SV Urfahr-Donaukai and FC Nussbaum (Steinmetzplatzl).

The Urfahraner players Othmar Holzer and Wilhelm Steininger were finally able to win the landowner (and later regular guest) Rieseneder to let them play football on his abandoned clay pit.

The two kicking groups from Urfahr joined forces in 1908, but initially did not constitute an official club, as most of the athletes were still minors.

In 1912 the club was officially established as the Urfahr Sports Association (in addition to football, other sports were also practiced) by the following founding members: Josef Mayr sen. (1st chairman), Hans and Sepp Eigner, Othmar Holzer, Wilhelm and Franz Steininger, Matthias Achleitner, Hans Meindl, Karl Kniemoos, Franz Beyda, Alfred Rosenberger, Karl Schwetz, Fritz Jungwirth, Karl Großmann, Josef and Franz Karafiat, Fritz Liedl , as well as Alfred and Heinz Tichy. Based on the WAC , black and red were selected as the club colors.

However, from 1914 onwards, gaming operations had to be suspended due to the First World War and did not start again until 1919. From 1922 the association began to recruit more young people. This should have successful effects later.

First big successes

Because while SV Urfahr was consistently placed in the middle of the field in the championships until 1927, some titles were celebrated from the following year.

In 1928 the SVU became champions of Upper Austria for the first time. In 1933 and 1937 this title could be won twice. In addition, the club won the Upper Austrian State Cup in 1933, 1934 and 1936.

After Austria by the Nazis annexed and the league system was reorganized, the SV Urfahr occurred from 1937 to 1945 in the county class Oberdonau on.

After the Second World War , the sports association played in the so-called 1st class for two years until the regional league was founded in 1948, which Urfahr was part of in the years to come.

Heyday

1951 succeeded for the first time in fifteen years to win a title with the Upper Austrian Cup. One year later at Easter, the new sports facility of SV Urfahr was opened on Ferihumerstraße, where it is still located today.

One year later the club won the championship title in the 1st national league and thus rose to the state league B , but the next year they were relegated from the state league, and a flood destroyed almost the entire sports facility of the SVU. After this was rebuilt, the SK Admira Linz became a subtenant on Ferihumerstraße in 1955.

Back and forth

In 1963 there was the next descent from the 1st regional league to the district class East, two years later the club newspaper SVU-Vereinspost appeared for the first time .

Finally, in 1966, the sports association was promoted to the regional league again as champions of the district class East. In the following season, the club surprisingly won the runner-up in the regional league and won the Upper Austrian regional cup. Therefore, the club was allowed to participate in the ÖFB Cup on August 13, 1967. FK Austria Wien defeated SVU 8-0 in the first round. The club also played a friendly against Sparta Prague , which they lost 2:10, while the following year in Prague there was a close 1: 3.

The SVU also won the Upper Austrian Cup in 1969, and Urfahr suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat in the subsequent first-round game of the ÖFB Cup against Rapid Vienna .

A year later, a floodlight system could be built on the club's premises, with which the sports association, however, was relegated to the 2nd national league. But in the next year the ascent succeeded.

1975 followed another relegation to the 2nd national league. Nevertheless, the largest junior tournament in Upper Austria took place in Urfahr this year , with numerous prominent clubs taking part.

In 1976, the Lower League West and East was founded, the SVU played from then on in the East season, but was relegated to the District Class North in the next season.

In 1978 the Knollmaier-Steininger Memorial Tournament was held for the first time in Urfahr, which SK Donau Linz won.

In 1980, after the two previous relegations with the championship title of the district class North, the renewed promotion to the now renamed 2. Landesliga Ost. On September 30, 1982, the new SV Urfahr sports center was opened. In the next season, after eight years, the club was able to return to the 1st regional league, but this was followed by a direct relegation. Again four seasons later, the club was relegated from the 2nd regional league to the district class, and the SVU club mail was renamed SVU Journal .

In 1994 the club held a training camp for the first time. We went to Turkey for a week.

Decline & existential threat

In 1998 a further expansion of the sports facilities followed with a new cabin wing, and a year later the construction of a grandstand began. In May 2000 the grandstand was completed and the soccer fields renovated. The SVU-Journal was published for the last time this year .

But in 2001 the club had to relegate from the district league to the first class middle, a year later they reached the runner-up title there. In 2002 the club's own homepage was launched. After a big party was held for the 90th anniversary of the SVU, a flood devastated the sports facilities of the club, which then had to play all home games away from home. Due to the lack of audience income, the club ran into financial problems, so that the renovation of the facilities was delayed.

Urfahr was only able to play on its soccer fields again in 2003/04. In the following year a syndicate was entered into with the amateurs of LASK Linz . However, when the team was relegated to 2nd class in the following season, the syndicate was dissolved again.

Restart

In 2006 they were promoted back to 1st class middle, but the team rose again shortly afterwards and then played in 2nd class middle until the 2010/11 season. For the 2011/12 season, the team was divided into the 2nd class north-middle, where the sixth place was achieved in the first season. Four points were missing from the relegation place. In the 2012/2013 season, however, SV Urfahr was able to confidently secure the championship title in the 2nd class North-Central four laps before the end. The Urfahraner did not suffer a single defeat under coach Fritz Ulmer and only lost one point. Thus, SVU will play in 1st class again in the 2013/14 season. Shortly after the championship title was fixed, the sports field of SV Urfahr was hit again by a flood, which caused damage of more than 300,000 euros. Because of the flooding, the club had to switch to the sports facility of ASK Nettingsdorf in the 2013/14 season, which ceased football operations in 2002. In the first season after returning to 1st class, SV Urfahr reached seventh place. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, ex-Voest player Fritz Ulmer was replaced as coach by Walter Altmüller. In the course of the spring season Altmüller resigned and the long-time Urfahr player Michael Dochnal became the new coach. The Urfahraner had to accept numerous departures before the season and ended up only in 14th and last place, which meant that they had to accept relegation to 2nd class. For the 2015/16 season, chairman Mario Mayer also took on the role of coach. After the autumn championship title could be achieved, the team fell back a bit in the spring and ended up in third place.

In the following seasons, high performers had to be given up again and again. So they reached sixth place in the 2016/17 season, only eleventh place in 2017/18 and tenth place in 2018/19. In February 2019, Markus Ecker and Stefan Fröhlich took over as coaches for Urfahranern.
