The SK Waizenauer Schärding is a football club from the town of Schärding am Inn in Upper Austria . The club currently plays in the Upper Austrian Regional League West, the fifth Upper Austrian division. The SK Waizenauer Schärding plays its home games in the club's own racetrack stadium in Schärding. The SKS, as the club is also called, was founded in 1922 and is one of the oldest football clubs in Austria.
history
The early period 1922–1955
At the beginning of 1922, a handful of young men, none over 18 years old, founded the SK Sturm Schärding football club. The main initiators were Karl Fink and Herbert Stelzmüller. The club colors were white and black and the dresses were tailored by the respective mothers themselves. A farmer in St. Florian am Inn made his pasture available as a sports field. Playing partners were primarily Bavarian clubs, as there were no other clubs in the Innviertel besides Ried and Braunau. The club was often re-established as FC Schärding, for example in 1925 and 1932. Due to a border barrier, games with the Bavarian teams had to be stopped from autumn 1933 until 1935. The players from Neuhaus am Inn working for the SK were also affected, which meant a bitter loss for the club. In 1934 the members of the ATSV, which was dissolved at the time for political reasons, joined the SKS, which then as now was and is a completely non-political association. During this time the handball, fistball and athletics sections were created. The Schärdinger Wochenblatt turned to the supporters of the ATSV at that time to also remain loyal to the SKS. The SK Schärding was continued as a Hitler Youth team due to the political situation. From 1934 on they were finally called SK Schärding. The club colors have been black and red since 1925. The first team played after the founding at the sports field Auf der Heide . In general, the question of the sports field caused great problems. The games were played on the heath, on a meadow next to the Schärdinger cemetery, on the racetrack, on a meadow under the Butterzentrale and in the Grüntal. In 1934 Baumgartnerfeld - today Kubinstrasse - finally had a home for a long time. The ceremonial opening of the square took place in 1932. A covered grandstand was opened in 1943.
Racetrack stadium
With the support of Gustav Kapsreiter, the SKS found its home in 1950 on the site of the former racetrack - hence the name Rennbahnstadion to this day . During this time, games were held against well-known teams such as Racing Strasbourg and Wacker Vienna . In front of 2500 spectators, SK Schärding was defeated by Admira Vienna 2: 5. On the occasion of a game against Wacker Vienna, the famous Austrian actor Hans Moser also visited the SKS sports field.
The heyday 1956–1968
In 1956 SK Schärding was promoted to the national soccer league (Austria) - at that time the 3rd division. Well-known names from this time are: the later national player - Trubrig Heribert, goalkeeper Schröckeneder, Ing.Veits, Hlavaczek Franz and Herbert Rutzinger. By 1968, the SK Schärding played 12 seasons continuously in the 3rd league, the state championship of Upper Austria.
Dry spell and 2nd heyday
In 1968 the SKS had to relegate from the regional league to the regional league, as the second regional league did not exist at that time. Many final places also in the Innviertel Cup document the outstanding position of the SKS in the Innviertel. In 1973 the SKS achieved the only victory in the Innviertel Cup with a 5-0 win against Neukirchen / Enknach in the Rieder Stadium.
In 1975, in the second year after the introduction of the 2nd regional league, the SKS rose again after relegation games against SV Vöcklabruck. The SKS won in Vöcklabruck with 2: 1 and achieved promotion in Schärding in front of 2500 spectators with a 0: 0. From 1975 to 2003 the SKS played continuously in the 2nd national league, with an interruption in 1986. In 1994, the SK Schärding, with a team consisting almost entirely of self-made players, succeeded again in the regional league of Upper Austria . The player-coach at the time was Edi Kirschner , a former professional player for FC Bayern Munich . Edi Kirschner scored decisive goals as a player and was the outstanding player of the time alongside goalkeeper Ernst Winterstetter, Patrick Reidinger and Haslehner Franz. One of the greatest successes in recent years was the performance in the Austrian Football Cup in 1997. Only FC Tirol was able to defeat the SKS in the sixteenth finals. Before that, the old rival SV Braunau - then 2nd division (Austria) - was eliminated.
June 2013 - flood drama
SK Schärding is used to high water. However, as part of the flood disaster of the century in 2013, the club's sports facility was hit to a previously unknown extent. The clubhouse, which was already slightly elevated, was under water up to the roof. The training ground and the main pitch were flooded approx. 4 m up to the roof of the grandstand. The club house, damaged by several floods, has to be demolished. The damage was determined by an expert as a total loss to the building fabric and amounts to several hundred thousand euros. In order to keep the game going, the club house was provisionally restored.
July 2015 - New club home
The 2013 flood literally left the old clubhouse with the proverbial rest after 35 years and a number of flood damage. On July 4th, 2013 SK Rapid Wien played in a charity match in favor of SK Schärding against a district selection and won 7-0. Two years later, the financing for a new building was finally secured. After the albatross concert in July 2015, the time had come for the groundbreaking ceremony for the new building. Part of the old building was demolished and the foundations for the new clubhouse started. The new building will be erected on stilts and the almost annual problems with flooding should finally be a thing of the past. In autumn 2016, the rest of the old building was demolished and the new clubhouse was put into operation.
The current situation
After relegation from the Upper Austria League in 1999, the SK Schärding was last in the following season and was relegated to the district league. There one could, however, prevent the further crash and achieve immediate promotion to the Landesliga West with the championship title in the 2000/01 season. They have been playing there since 2001 and in the 2011/12 season, in a dramatic season finale that was only decided in the third minute of stoppage time, they missed promotion to the Upper Austria League only because of the poorer goal difference. A few weaker years followed, in which one was often close to decline. In the 2018/19 season they were in the absolute top group until shortly before the end of the season and finished in 3rd place and thus just missed the return to the Upper Austria League. The club was not lucky in the 2019/20 season either. After a very good first half of the season with the autumn championship title, the season in spring 2020 was canceled without result due to the corona crisis.
