The sports club Grödig is an Austrian sports and football club from the municipality of Grödig in the state of Salzburg and has played in the top Austrian division, the Bundesliga , since the 2013/14 season . In the 2015/16 season , SV Grödig did not get past tenth and last place and should have been relegated to the First League, but Grödig renounced the license for this league and has played in the Regionalliga West since then .
history
The sports club was founded as Union Sportklub Grödig on March 20, 1948 by German-speaking refugees who lived in the so-called Schwabenlager Grödig , a camp for displaced persons , in the post-war years . After being accepted into the Salzburg Football Association as a protection club, USK Grödig was allowed to participate in the championship in 2nd class B in the 1949/50 season. For the time being, however, just like the Danubian Swabian sister associations Danubia Salzburg and Victoria Salzburg, only out of competition, since the Danube Swabians were considered foreigners in Austria and that was not compatible with the "non-Austrian restriction" set out in the ÖFB regulations. Danubia became the unofficial champion of this first season ahead of the official champion Anif . On September 4, 1955, the Union Sportklub was renamed SV Grödig. Today Grödig is not only the most successful, but also the last remaining football club in Salzburg founded by Danube Swabian refugees.
The club colors of the club are dark blue and white. The Grödig team achieved their first success in 1967 with promotion to the Salzburg regional league (3rd level). In 1977 the club qualified as runner-up in the fourth-class Salzburg league behind ASK Salzburg for the newly introduced third-class Alpine league and in the same year reached the second round in the ÖFB Cup , in which the club failed at the Graz AK . After several years of failure, which ended in relegation to the last division, the sports club was able to level off between the 1st class and the 2nd national league at the beginning of the 1990s.
Since the 2002/03 game year, Grödig had a streak of success with three championship titles in four seasons and played from 1st Class North to Regional League West . In the 2005/06 game year , the Grödiger found themselves consistently at the top of the table, but the championship title seemed to have already been awarded to local competitor USK Anif in the last third of the championship . In the third to last lap, SV Grödig was able to overtake the ailing Anifer and thus celebrated the return to the third level after relegation from the regional league in 1980.
Promotion to the first division
In the summer break of 2006, the club caused a sensation throughout Austria with the engagement of former national team player Edi Glieder as the new coach. In the 2006/07 season he came sixth. In the following year, another prominent coach was brought in Heimo Pfeifenberger , who was finally able to fix the desired promotion to the first division on May 21, 2008 with a 2-2 draw against FC Hard . Despite the promotion to the first division and eighth place, Heimo Pfeifenberger was given a leave of absence two weeks after the end of the autumn championship because the then President Toni Haas could no longer imagine "a positive and promising cooperation". Miroslav Bojčeski , who previously coached SV Austria Salzburg , was appointed as his successor . Nevertheless, the relegation could not succeed, the team fell back to 10th place and had to return to the Regionalliga West. Then Michael Brandner , before that coach of the 1b team, took over the training of the combat team. However, he announced his resignation in March 2010. Heimo Pfeifenberger was introduced as his successor on April 5, 2010.
Promotion and championship in the first division
The 2009/10 season went perfectly for the sports club, and at the end of the season they were able to fix their promotion back to the first division. First you would have had to play against First Vienna FC in two relegation games to get a place in the league. But due to the refusal to license for SK Austria Kärnten and FC Dornbirn in 1913 , you could get promoted directly. Two transfer hits were set for the new season and so sporting director Christian Haas was able to bring Herwig Drechsel and Matthias Hattenberger to Salzburg. In winter, ex ÖFB -Goalie Andreas Schranz and returnees Diego Viana followed . On May 3, 2013, the team secured the championship title in the first division early and for the first time with a 2-1 win against pursuers Austria Lustenau .
Promotion to the Bundesliga and participation in international football
The promoted to the top Austrian league proved to be the sensation team par excellence in the 2013/14 season and qualified for the UEFA Europa League qualifying with third place behind champions FC Red Bull Salzburg and Rapid Vienna . Successful coach Adi Hütter switched to Red Bull Salzburg after the championship ended, and the new coach was Michael Baur from Tyrol . This continued the successful run of the Grödigers: In the second qualifying round for the UEFA Europa League, they defeated Čukarički Belgrade , fifth in the Serbian championship , with a total score of 5: 2 and thus advanced into the third qualifying round, where the opponent Zimbru Chișinău was from Moldova . After a home defeat (1: 2) an away win (1: 0) was not enough to prevent the elimination.
In the autumn season 2014/15 the Grödigers took sixth place. After seven years, the German scrap dealer Scholz ended the cooperation with the club because the company withdrew from sponsoring sports. In the winter transition period, the club lost the top scorer Yordy Reyna , who moved to the second German Bundesliga to RB Leipzig . Lucas Venuto from FC Liefering was on loan to replace him.
Relegation from the Bundesliga in 2015/16
After a spring season that was unsatisfactory for the club, a new coaching duo was installed at the end of the 2014/15 championship with Peter Schöttel and Martin Hiden . Numerous top performers left the club and were replaced by young players. Among them are Christian Derflinger , Dominik Baumgartner , Alexander Schlager , Bernd Gschweidl and Martin Rasner players who belong to the cadres of the Austrian U19, U20 and U21 national teams. SV Grödig has had a president again since October 15, 2015: Helmut Gruber, Managing Director of the Salzburg advertising agency GA Service GmbH , succeeded Toni Haas, who officially resigned three years ago, but also in an advisory capacity to the club during the “presidential-less” period was available. Toni Haas was appointed Honorary President for life.
At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, which was contested with Peter Schöttel as coach, things went well for SV Grödig. After the end of the first half of the season, the club was in sixth place in the table with 23 points. After Grödig lost Lucas Venuto to FK Austria Wien , the second half of the season was disastrous. The team only achieved two wins and three draws, fell back place by place and ended up only in tenth and last place, which was synonymous with relegation from the Bundesliga to the first division. However, Grödig renounced the license for the First League and thus withdrew from professional football to continue playing in the Regionalliga West . In addition, on the last matchday in Mattersburg, coach Peter Schöttel announced that he would withdraw from his contract, which was originally limited to 2017, as this only applies to the top division.
