The Hornet 900, internal designation CB900F, is an undisguised motorcycle from the vehicle manufacturer Honda . The naked bike was produced by Honda in Japan , Italy and the USA from 2002 to 2005 . A little more than 5,000 pieces were sold in Germany. The model code is SC48. Due to the rights to the name "Hornet" granted to the American Motors Corporation (AMC) in the USA , the motorcycle was marketed there as the CB919.

Model history

The Hornet 900 was developed by Honda from 2001 to 2002 based on the Honda CB 600 F Hornet , which has been in production for several years . The basic concept of the Hornet series was retained. The central element here is the so-called mono-backbone frame , a rectangular profile tube that extends from the steering head at the front under the tank and through the bench to the rear. In accordance with the higher engine power, the wall thickness of the box profile was increased from 1.6 mm on the 600 to 2.3 mm and the frame in the area of the steering head was reinforced. Downwardly open beams reinforced with a cross strut, the so-called diamond frame , accommodate the motor as a load-bearing element. The style-defining feature of this is the overall concealed arrangement of the frame , which gives the viewer the impression that the engine is mounted “floating”.

The drive concept was also retained. As with the "smaller sister", the engine was taken from the Honda CBR sports series . It comes from the CBR 900 RR Fireblade built in 1998 (SC 33 II) and has been modified in the cylinder head area according to its intended use , the compression slightly reduced in order to achieve a fuller torque curve in the medium speed range with controllable power output . He also got fuel injection and an unregulated catalytic converter for Germany . No catalytic converter was installed in other European countries ; there the power was therefore 81 instead of 80 kW.

In 2004, the Hornet 900 was subjected to a subtle facelift. In addition to a modified ignition electronics map, which has since met the Euro-2 emissions standard and enables the engine to respond more smoothly when it comes to throttle response, it received a new telescopic fork with the possibility of adjusting the spring base and rebound damping. The rebound stage of the rear central spring strut can now also be adjusted, the instruments have chrome bezels and the seat bench has foldable luggage hooks. In addition, the on-board computer has been supplemented by a second trip meter and a clock.

In 2005, the Hornet 900 was removed from the Honda Germany model catalog and the remaining stocks were sold at significantly reduced prices in some cases - it was still available abroad. The "big Hornet" was therefore not a top sales success for Honda in Germany, but it is considered a best seller in Italy.

equipment

Numerous accessories are available for the Hornet 900 both from the manufacturer Honda and from suppliers. The Hornet 900, which is only equipped with a side stand as standard, can be retrofitted with a main stand, for which retaining flanges are already available. Optionally, you can also retrofit an alarm system or a windshield. Conversions of the handlebars are popular, with the original part being exchanged for a wider superbike handlebar. For the standard telescopic fork, which is often perceived as too soft, various springs are available that make it possible to adapt the motorcycle to the personal requirements and weight levels of the rider. Overall, the spectrum of conversions ranges from slight modifications to make the motorcycle more suitable for touring, to extreme streetfighter designs.

recall

In 2003 some CB 900 F Hornet had problems with the fuel pump. Affected were models with the chassis numbers 101111 to 101630 (end number), where the defect should be repaired in the authorized workshops.

service

The service intervals are 6,000 km, except for the first check after 1,000 kilometers. Among other things, an oil and oil filter change is necessary for every second service, for every third service, if necessary, the brake fluid and brake blocks are changed and the valves are set and spark plugs are changed at every fourth interval.
