The Honda VFR 800 F is a fully faired motorcycle from the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer Honda . The sports tourer was presented on November 5, 2013 at the EICMA two-wheeler fair in Milan . The sales name VFR stands for Vee-Four Road , i.e. for V-engine with four cylinders for the street, the suffix F after the displacement class means fairing ( German  cladding ). The factory code is RC 79 (from 2017: RC93), with RC denotes Honda street bikes. In the United States, the sales name is Interceptor [ ˌɪntəˈseptəʳ ] ( German  interceptor ).

Competitive models with comparable characteristics and a displacement of less than 1000 cm³ are the sports tourers BMW F 800 GT and the Kawasaki Z 1000 SX .

Model development

The RC 79 is already the sixth generation of the VFR series , which has been in production since 1985 . Compared to the previous model, the VFR 800 V4 VTEC , which was built until 2010 , the revised VFR 800 F has only one silencer, traction control and new instrumentation. The full fairing has been redesigned aerodynamically. The coolers , which were previously placed on the side, have been re-installed in the center, which means that the cladding has been slimmed down from 540 to 500 mm. The x-shaped double headlights and the taillights are designed using LED technology. An exhaust system with only one silencer reduced the vehicle weight by 7 kg, a modified rear frame made of die-cast aluminum by a further 3 kg.

construction

drive

The motor is based on the RC 46 / II from 2002, but with an improved variable valve timing and lift electronic control ( VTEC ), which, from a speed of 6500 min −1, opens the other valves via a hydraulic pawl in the bucket tappets switches on and thus switches from two- to four-valve control.

The liquid-cooled four - cylinder engine with the name "V-Four" generates a nominal output of 78 kW (106 hp) and a maximum torque of 75 Nm at a speed of 8500 min −1 from a displacement of 782 cm³ . The transversely installed V-engine has a cylinder bank angle of 90 degrees. The four cylinders of the short stroke have a bore of 72 mm diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 48 mm with a compression ratio of 11.8: 1. In the two cylinder heads of the four-stroke engine , two chain-driven, overhead camshafts rotate, depending on the speed , which control two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.6 s and reaches a top speed of 242 km / h.

Power transmission

The primary drive takes place via gears. A hydraulically operated multi-plate oil bath clutch separates the engine from the six-speed transmission . In the secondary drive between the gearbox output and rear a working chain drive .

Electrics

The starter battery has a capacity of 11  ampere hours and supplies the electric starter . The alternator generates a nominal electrical output of 420 watts.

Fuel supply

The mixture is formed by an electronically controlled fuel injection ( PGM-FI programmed fuel injection ). Each cylinder is ignited by a transistor-controlled ignition system. Due to the high compression ratio, the manufacturer recommends the use of unleaded motor gasoline with a knock resistance of at least 95  octane .

The two-part fuel tank has a volume of 21.5 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. The average fuel consumption on country roads is 4.5 l per 100 km. The theoretical range on country roads is 478 km.

The exhaust aftertreatment is carried out by a regulated three-way catalytic converter with two lambda probes and is below the emission limit values of the Euro-3 emissions standard . The 4-in-1 exhaust system flows into a stainless steel rear silencer on the right-hand side of the vehicle .

landing gear

The chassis is built on a bridge frame made of aluminum profiles and has a single-sided swing arm made of cast aluminum with progressive deflection and torque support. The motor-gear unit is load-bearing.

The front wheel is guided by a telescopic fork with a 43 mm standpipe diameter and 108 mm travel. The motorcycle has 126 mm of ground clearance. The ready-to-drive weight is 242 kg, the maximum payload is 190 kg and the gross vehicle weight is 432 kg.

Braking system

A hydraulically operated double disc brake decelerates on the front tire and a disc brake on the rear. All three brake discs are equipped with a four-piston floating caliper. A two-channel anti-lock braking system from Continental supports the deceleration on both brakes. A traction control that can be switched off is installed as standard. The cast aluminum wheels are 3.50 × 17 "at the front and 5.50 × 17" at the rear. The motorcycle decelerates from 100 km / h to a standstill with an average of 9.5 m / s².

The motorcycle is available in Germany in the colors “Victory Red” (red) and “Darkness Black Metallic” (black), and abroad in “White Pearl” (white).

Reviews

“The 800 pampers you with great running culture, turns silky and freely. Accompanied by wonderful grumbling, the firing order of the V4 with 180-degree crankshaft. This ultra-short stroke is strong in character, but weak in torque. "

- Thomas Schmieder : Motorcycle

“The first impression: That was the nineties. Angular cladding, fully clad - the VFR 800 looks today as if it was out of date. Honda has been building the VFR 800 almost unchanged since 1998; the current model is the first significant update in twelve years. "

- Jochen Vorfelder : Spiegel Online

“The VFR 800 F is a great motorcycle. Despite the current revision, it is a bit old. Nevertheless, it is a very sporty bike that is also good for longer tours, but is basically not for die-hard tourers. For a real athlete it is then again too heavy and unwieldy. In between, she makes everyone happy. "
