The Kawasaki Z 1000 SX is a motorcycle from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Kawasaki . The sports tourer was presented on October 1, 2010 at the Intermot two-wheeler fair in Cologne and is manufactured in Akashi .

construction

The engine and drive train, frame and ergonomics, swing arm and brakes were taken from the naked Kawasaki Z 1000 bike (factory code ZRT00D). The fuel tank has been expanded from 15 to 19 liters and the gear ratio has been designed a little longer. The suffix SX stands for special extra , the factory code is ZXT00G.

drive

Liquid-cooled four-cylinder engine generates Since 2013 cc displacement of 1043, a nominal power of 105 kW (143 hp) and a maximum torque of 111 Nm at a speed of 7300 min -1 . The four cylinders have a bore of 77 mm in diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 56 mm with a compression ratio of 11.8: 1. In the cylinder head rotate two chain-driven, overhead camshafts (DOHC) which via tappets drive two inlet valves and two exhaust valves. A balance shaft reduces vibrations in the four-stroke engine . A pressure circulation lubrication pumps the engine oil from the wet sump to the bearings and cylinders.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 247 km / h.

Power transmission

The primary drive takes place via gears. The mechanically operated multi-plate clutch runs in an oil bath and separates the engine from the six-speed gearbox . In the secondary drive , an O-ring chain connects the transmission output shaft with the rear axle.

Electrical system

The starter battery has a capacity of 8 ampere hours and supplies the electric starter . The alternator generates an electrical output of 336 watts. A double headlight for high and low beam and the direction indicators are integrated in the front panel , the rear and brake lights are LED technology . In the cockpit, to the right of the analog tachometer, a liquid crystal display provides information on speed, fuel level and distance traveled. There is no gear or temperature display or an on-board power socket . A gear indicator was integrated in the 2017 model. Likewise an ambient temperature display. A 12 volt on-board power socket can now also be selected as an option.

Fuel supply

The fuel tank has a volume of 19 liters. The average fuel consumption is 6.2 liters per 100 km. The theoretical range is 327 km. The manufacturer recommends using unleaded petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane . A regulated three-way catalytic converter with a secondary air system reduces pollutant emissions below the limit values of the Euro-3 emissions standard . The 4-2-4 exhaust system flows into four rear silencers on both sides of the rear swing arm .

landing gear

The chassis is based on a double profile backbone frame made of aluminum and has a two-arm swing arm at the rear, also made of aluminum. The front wheel is guided by an upside-down telescopic fork with a 41 mm standpipe diameter. A double disc brake with four-piston fixed calipers from Tokico decelerates on the front tire, and a disc brake with a single-piston floating caliper at the rear . The shock absorber was adopted from the Kawasaki ZX-10R and is adjustable in rebound and spring base. An anti-lock braking system with rollover protection from Bosch supports the deceleration on both brakes. In order to brake from 100 km / h to a standstill, the motorcycle needs a braking distance of 39.7 meters with an average braking deceleration of 9.5 m / s².

A disengageable, three-stage traction control (English. Kawasaki Traction Control, KTRC ) prevents the rear wheel from spinning . The curb weight is 231 kg, the maximum payload 183 kg. The steering head has a steep angle of 65.5 degrees. The short wheelbase of 1445 mm and caster of 102 mm leads to agile vehicle behavior , especially since the vehicle masses are compact and centrally located at the center of gravity.

The motorcycle is available in three colors: Candy Lime Green (green), Metallic Spark Black (black) and Metallic Graphite Gray (anthracite).

Market situation

Motorcycles with comparable engine characteristics and chassis geometry and a displacement of less than one liter are the sports tourers Honda CBF1000F , Suzuki GSX-S1000F , BMW F 800 GT and the Honda VFR800F .

Reviews

“Both the fork and the shock absorber do their job almost optimally and represent a very successful compromise between comfort and sport. For extreme athletes it may be too soft, for extreme tourers too hard. The set-up is ideally suited for daily - also sporty - use. "

- biker scene

“Sporty touring with powerful driving dynamics and balanced driving characteristics can rarely be found in such harmony. Many touring motorcycles are too sluggish and most sports bikes are not comfortable enough. In this respect, the Kawasaki Z1000SX fills a real gap. "

- Thilo Kozik : Handelsblatt

“With the Z 1000 SX, the Greens have simply created their own niche, a kind of super sports tourer. Visually, it is close to the current ninjas. Thanks to the Z 1000 technology, the SX is very powerful, not too heavy with a full tank of 231 kg and easy to handle despite the 190 rear wheel. "

- Till Ferges : Motorcycle News

“Depending on the road and load condition, the Kawa sometimes lifts the rear tire slightly, sometimes there is noticeable movement in the front tires. Try it out, and after three attempts you will get used to it. Just like good handling. The Kawasaki Z 1000 SX prefers the classic cornering style: decelerate, turn in, around. Anyone who does not hold on to it and grabs the radial brake pump in an inclined position has to be prepared for a considerable set-up moment. "
