The Kawasaki ER-5 is a mid-range motorcycle from the Japanese manufacturer Kawasaki , which was launched in 1996 and whose sales were discontinued at the end of 2006.
The in- line engine comes from the GPZ 500 , but because of different camshafts , lower compression, different exhaust system and different carburetor set-up with 50 HP, 10 HP less than the GPZ 500 (since 2004 11 HP less).
Because of the simple technology (carburetor, no digital engine management ), the ER-5 is highly reliable and has low acquisition and maintenance costs. In addition, many maintenance and repair work can be carried out by yourself without great effort. Therefore, the ER-5 is particularly suitable for everyday trips. Novice drivers are also a target group because of the easy handling and low weight. For these, the ER-5 is also offered with a version throttled to 34 hp.
It was slightly modified over the years through several model updates. Among other things, the ER-5 has been equipped with an unregulated catalytic converter (U-Kat) since 2004, which complies with the Euro2 standard. For this, the power was limited to 49 hp.
Since January 2007, only motorcycles that meet the Euro3 standard can be sold in the European Union. Because the conversion of the outdated technology of the ER-5 would be too expensive and thus the price advantage compared to the ER-6 would largely be eliminated, production was discontinued.
