The Kawasaki 400 S3 was a motorcycle from the Japanese manufacturer Kawasaki Motorcycles and was built from 1973 to 1979. From 1976 to 1979 it was sold as the KH 400.

History and technology

In 1973 the 400 S3 appeared on the motorcycle market and replaced the 350 S2 .

The 400 S3 was powered by an air-cooled three-cylinder in-line engine with a 120 degree stroke offset. The piston edges controlled the inlet. To prevent the central cylinder from overheating, the outer cooling fins were shaped so that additional air could reach it. The engine had an interrupter ignition and three Mixuni VM 28 SC carburettors. A load and speed dependent oil pump supplied the carburettor with the two-stroke oil. The spark plugs for the city and touring were 12 NGK B-8 HCS and B-9 HCS for the motorway. A narrow tubular backbone frame with two beams formed the base of the motorcycle, a telescopic fork and a two-armed rear swing arm accommodated the wheels with tires measuring 3.25–18 (front) and 3.50–18 (rear). The front wheel was decelerated with a 277 mm disc brake , the rear with a 180 mm simplex brake and 30 mm shoe width.

Encouraged by the success of the 500 H1 Mach III , the 250 S1 Mach I (250-SS) and Kawasaki 350 S2 Mach II (350-SS) were offered in the smaller classes in 1971 , as well as the Kawasaki 400 S3 (later KH 400) in 1973 . As the top model from 1972, Kawasaki had the 750 H2 Mach IV in its range, which set new standards in acceleration and top speed.

Detlev Louis was the general importer of the emerging Kawasaki motorcycles for Germany from 1969 to 1975 .
