The Kawasaki 250 S1 was a motorcycle from the Japanese manufacturer Kawasaki and was built from 1970 to 1976. In Japan, it was 250-SS named and in the US they got the extra Mach I .
History and technology
In 1971 the 250 S1 Mach I appeared on the market. It replaced the 250 Samurai A1 with a two-cylinder and rotary valve intake control side, the 31 hp (25 kW) at 8,000 min -1 had produced. The 250 S1 was powered by an air-cooled three-cylinder in-line engine with a 120 degree stroke offset. The piston edges controlled the inlet. To prevent the central cylinder from overheating, the outer cooling fins were shaped so that additional air could reach it. The engine had contactless electronic ignition and three Mikuni carburetors. A narrow tubular backbone frame with two beams formed the basis of the motorcycle, a telescopic fork and a two-armed rear swing arm accommodated the wheels with tires in the dimensions 3.00–18 (front) and 3.25–18 (rear). The front wheel was decelerated with a 180 mm duplex drum brake and the rear with a 180 mm simplex brake. From 1976, with the KH 250 B-1, a disc brake was installed at the front.
Stimulated by the success of the 500 H1 Mach III , the Kawasaki 250 S1 Mach I (250-SS) and 350 S2 Mach II (350-SS ) were offered in the smaller classes in 1971 , as well as the 400 S3 (later KH 400) in 1973 . As the top model from 1972, Kawasaki had the 750 H2 Mach IV in its range, which set new standards in acceleration and top speed.
Well-preserved examples of the 250 S1 are offered today for over 3,500 euros, the price at that time (1971) was 3,490 DM .
Detlev Louis was the general importer of the emerging Kawasaki motorcycles for Germany from 1969 to 1975 .
